Okay so I updated to the newest version of the Direwolf20 pack and this happened to a Silverwood tree on a server I play on.
2013-01-28_18.54.04.png

The tree is in a Mystcraft Age with crystals, glowstone, and eternal day.
The modpack used is mostly Direwolf20 with advanced machines from Mindcrack and the advanced power management addon for ICw

Their are no major changes to the DW20 Modpack other than the 2 added mods.
The guy who runs the server has been checking the logs and hasn't found anything to indicate why this happened.
EDIT
Forgot the mention the Leaves have been replaced with Redstone Ore, and the tree trunk is Redstone Torches
Also after speaking to the guy who found it he found the tree while exploring and it was not like that before.

You sure it was the update? Did they maybe try and edit the map with MCedit or something?

Wouldn't make sens for it to be the update, since you still have silverwood leaves and such. If it were a block Id issue, the whole thing would be replaced.

This was found directly after the server came back up after an update when one of the players was exploring in a mystcraft age. The guy who found it does not run the server.

This makes me lol on so many levels. Anyway are you certain this tree was found before the update? Normally generated chunks in a map don't get regenerated like that. Unless the server owner did something and didn't say so. Regardless free redstone. silk touch dat foo!

In my original post I got it wrong this was found After the update not before.. The tree generated like this when one of the players found it.
The tree has been left alone as a monument to minecraft bugginess as everyone on the server thinks the tree is pretty awesome.
The tree was generated while the server was running so MCedit trickery has been ruled out.
