Should you "complete" minecraft first?

Was having a friendly discussion with a friend of mine about Minecraft and I stated that I hadn't actually played the game Vanilla for more than about 30 mins.

Do you think someone needs to have a good idea of how minecraft works before getting stuck into mod packs? Im interested in people thoughts on this.

Thanks
Brian

well, it's a good idea to get a basic understanding from Vanilla minecraft before moving towards modpacks, otherwise the player will not now what is added by Vanilla, and what is added by mods

I don't think you miss much by skipping vanilla. However, you also don't get as much appreciation for the incredible work done on mods/modpacks when you haven't experienced the base product.

Well, ultimately, if you don't understand the mechanics of the effectiveness of food, whether to go for an Iron sword or not, or just the basic "feel" of vanilla, modded might be harder, but the journey should still be enjoyable if you use mods. Just may have to go on the vanilla wiki on occasion.

I've never gone to the end without doing it on a server. So I've never beat the game on SSP.

Knowing vanilla mechanics is very handy at times when trouble shooting modded builds, you can stick down the vanilla method (which is often bulky and inelegant) as they are known quantities and you know they work.

Though I personally haven't played vanilla Minecraft since 1.3.2 and really have not much idea about the vanilla mechanics added since then I did however have a lot of experience in using vanilla redstone for automation as well as vanilla mob spawning mechanics, light levels things like that which has helped quite a lot with several modded builds I've done and it also showed me just how much nicer modded Minecraft is.

I never completed it...hell I would get bored to tears after 10 minutes in SSP every time I attempted it. And in SMP, i would get about two to three weeks until utter boredom.

I was in the same boat as you, I've only played roughly 30 mins maybe even less. I got bored of it but once I saw these mods in FTB I've been hooked ever since!

"Complete" minecraft?

Minecraft can never be completed. But you can kill the dragon, if that's what you mean.

===

"Modded" minecraft, unless the mod is relatively trivial, is a new game. Some mods don't alter vanilla mechanics, just add new things -- in which case, you can add them to your game (assuming no new worldgen to worry about). Others, like TiC, or Hunger Overhaul, make major changes to the game.

Being a "new game", then you have a new game :).

Now, the idea of learning a complex game by taking it in stages, so you learn a little at a time, makes sense. As you add new things in, play it a little to learn the basics; then, add in the next.

In the past, for example, I had a board game where the rules gave this process:
1. Basic movement (no combat)
2. Movement and combat (no cities)
3. Movement, combat, cities (but no production), and city conquest.
4. Full game.

I think you gain an appreciation and begin developing a personal asethic or artisic style that is very important in Modded MC. If you use a mod pack, like right now I am using Magic World 2, and there is an overwhelming amount of mods and things to learn and do. I was not sure where to dive in at and I just had to finally build on my previous knowledge of vanilla MC and use that as a stepping stop into a whole different game really.
With all that rambling said now, I think it is very important to have basic framework of the mechanics to really understand Mods to their fullest potential.

Vanilla knowledge is entirely optional.
Direwolf20 knows nothing of the vanilla game- and he's somewhat good with a mod or two.
Which gets back to the whole "different game" issue. Without those force fields, invulnerability armor, four hit wither killing weapons, etc. -- if he just had vanilla items, would he be able to take out a wither? ...

Ohh ... an infernal wither ...

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
No, but it sounds like fun.

Heh, watch me play magic farm :)

Actually watching Dire try out MagicFarm/Terrafirmacraft/BetterThanWolves would be brilliant funny.

Wait, did he deliberately die to reset his hunger bar? S6E1. Had food, had stone, could have easily eaten something or made a furnace to cook chicken, had plenty of warning ... just run back to bed, stuff stuff in chest, and ... wait for death.

He really needs to compress all that cobble.

Doesn't even bother with stairs ... And the whole "just dig down, and mine it all" -- I'd love to see him struggle with COG ...

that's what I've been saying often, direwolf really keeps to about the same modlist with each LP season, he should instead do a LP season with a modlist put together by the community and have a season where he needs to find new things out aswell, just like us. but I guess direwolf really want to keep his LP informative, which is understandable, but something different can be great aswell. so I'm really liking some of the random vanilla games he sometimes does
