I found the best way to deal with that problem was to set the Biomes of Plenty sizing up (down?) to 3. In this manner I end up with individual biomes covering aproximately 2/3 to half of a completely zoomed out minimap area.
Combined with keeping only biomes I actually would like to build in, those I'd like to see in the distance as backdrops and a few thrown in for variety's sake, I end up with 35-40 active biomes (including vanilla and hell biomes) instead of the close to 80 that are included if you let them all spawn.

The crag is one of my favourite biomes. I am just moving into a new base I mined out of a crag mountain that looks like the sugerloaf mountain. At the base of crag range is a huge vanilla plains biome where I am slowly putting farms. Merging into the crag is a huge sacred spring and I just found a tall cliff that had a pure node on top with a dramatic waterfall. After about 20 minutes terraforming (mainly to get rid of the shrubs) I was ready to start building a cool Thaum castle. There is even a village on the plains. It is a really awesome seed I might post it later when I can (I use different mods to unleashed so I don't know how the seed will translate but BoP and Natura are the only worldgen mods I have I think). I started out with a few awful seeds when I first made the move to BoP and I was seriously considering getting rid of it. But then I just got lucky a couple of times and I learnt which biomes I didn't like (flower garden I am avoiding looking at you) and I wouldn't go back now.

I completely understand that this is probably not many peoples idea of fun but I think Biomes o' plenty requires a bit of trial and error to get used to because there are so many biomes that can't be to everyone's taste. I have disabled at least 5 or 6 biomes now and others may have disabled more.

Also, I like that some biomes either make it very difficult to build or maybe even so impractical to be not worth it. I am looking forward to a late game challenge of trying to build a railway between my main base to my Thaumcraft room through that sacred spring without ruining the landscape. Other challenges await.

So after a bit of playing around with it, i find myself actually wanting to go back to XBXL or even vanilla worldgen over BoP.

Started over several times with random seeds, and after probably around 10 hours total worth of creative flying around trying to find a place to settle down and start survival mode BoP feels a little 'meh'

With a very few exceptions, the sky color changes are a deal-breaker for me in almost every biome that uses them, most look like they'd be fine on a passing through basis but having to see it nonstop for several hours unless im underground would wear thin fast. If the change was a little more subtle I probably wouldn't mind so much.

Aside from that, the actual terrain itself is in many biomes so broken up I'd spend more time terraforming than actually building. On my last restart i went through the config and disabled most of the biomes that i knew beyond the shadow of a doubt i wouldn't do anything with and/or didn't contribute some useful resource. Popped in, pointed west, and flew in a straight line with minimap fullscreened and zoomed out, and the only areas i came across that looked like they'd be nice to build on turned out to be either a tiny island or a small valley of nice terrain in the middle of an otherwise unbuildable/dont want this as a constant backdrop area. For example i had an area of decent wooded rolling hills but it was maybe four chunks worth of that surrounded by scrag, vertical-sided alps, the hellish burning biome i dont recall the name of, and sludgepit.

Dont get me wrong, most of the biomes themselves look great and there's a few nifty non-cosmetic bits here and there, but after the initial "ooh that looks cool" comes the "does this look like a place I'd want to build something?".

You can disable sky colors in the config. And I agree 100% with you on everything past the sky color part.

I personally like every biome apart from the Garden and Frozen Forest (the ice tree ones). But, i am using a texture pack which makes things more "natural" and the biomes do look really nice.
The thing with Biomes is that not everywhere will be suitable for building stuff (just like the real world) or provide usable resources. It's all for variation and exploration.
My personal favorites are Mesa (pretend you are on Mars!), Outback, Oasis and Crag.

BoP also allows for a pretty good wasteland config too (which we are using on Omega Dawn). Adds an extra challenge. That's the beauty though of BoP, you can configure it to your tastes, or game/server style.

How do I enter a biome? Do I need something special to get there? I have all these pages I traded with villagers with to have & have no idea what to do with. Please is there some kind of manual to guide someone through the process of getting started with this mod?? Please. I have been trying to figure this out for weeks now. I'm starting to pull my hair out. facepalm. deep sigh

Bit of a necro, but you need to research the Mystcraft mod. That uses those pages you've obtained, not Biomes o Plenty.

If you have been exploring your world awhile but still haven't come across a non vanilla biome then it is likely that you have have not selected the Biomes'o'plenty (BOP) world type. Basically BOP uses custom world gen which has to be enabled when you start a world. To do this, when you start a world go to the extra options as if you were selecting a superflat type world. Click on that button until you get to the BOP option and then generate a world.

Unfortunately, I do not think there is a good way to enable BOP biomes in the overworld in a world wher BOP isn't enabled. Like Golrith said, mystcraft is your best bet if you want overworld like worlds with BOP biomes in your current world. If you are not too attached to your current world, consider making a new one with BOP enabled from the start.

I think mystcraft is quite hard to understand but if you are looking for a good tutorial the best resource is probably here - http://binarymage.com/wiki/doku.php?id=start - the mystcraft website. Direwolf20 has a few good videos on it. Check the most recent spotlights/tutorials if you are interested.

I believe you are getting mixed up with mystcraft or some other mod. this mod adds a lot of new biomes, that you just discover like any other biomes I.E. forest, plains, tiaga, etc.

I believe you are exactly 6 months late with your assistance.

That being said, I won't use BoP without disabling every dead biome, most of the swamps, and most of the snow biomes. I never use them and they're ugly to me. No need to waste terrain gen

I'm very pleased with our last worldgen with BoP and Alternate Terrain Generator. We do have a few biomes disabled (dead and a few other ones), but the ATG climate band means that instead of a random hodgepodge of biomes, we have biomes organized by temperature across the map. The equator is at 0 on Z, so the hottest latitude is along the X axis. All the desert biomes are there. North and south of the equator you get more temperate biomes until you get to the arctic biomes.

Add that our server has WorldBorder with wrapping enabled at the climate band, and we essentially have a globe map.

Without BoP, it'd have much less variety.

I had no clue that ATG was capable of doing that. There's probably better fine tuning options than in vanilla 1.7. You've piqued my interests in ATG. That's something I would find very enjoyable.

Sorry for offtopic, but is ATG worth using now? Last time I tried, it was making everything a 45 degree slope, which made travelling or farming a pain. Was it fixed?
