Hello, I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the new year.

Happy to be here as a new member. I am new to purchased servers hosting/dedicated. I have already tried 2 server companies. I will not name them -I am a bit unhappy at this time. I am not here to bash anyone. Long ago... I used Bukkit (at the begining) adding a plug in for a home server was easy and simple to set up. I wanted to set up an outside (paid) server using FTB modpacks and or custom mods I create (with permissions).

My question is, what server hosting/dedicated sites are worth the money you spend on them? I do not mind spending a bit more knowing I will get questions answered, help with issues, and help with modded packs? Will be used for private use-small family group.

I pay for service, they have a support page to install FTB modpacks but they failed with support. We have an unlimited plan with full support. The site I tried before this new one was even worse. I love FTB.... I prefer FTB over other offers/mods/modpacks/launcher and more. It has been over a week and my server is still not up and running..

That depends on where you are located. If you are in the US or EU you might want to take a look at OVH or Kimsufi. There are others but those are the first that come to my mind.
I have been a co-admin on a friends server which was hosted on a Minecraft hosting company. We tried two different hosts and both were rubbish in terms of running modded minecraft.

I've had fairly good experience with Nitrous Networks. Haven't had any issues with uptime, and the server runs fairly smoothly, even with my big ol' kitchen sink pack. I forget exactly which package I have, but its the one that's around $35 USD a month, which isn't all that bad. I can't seem to find out how to do a totally custom server install with it (ie: using a newer Forge version than what the pack comes with), but that might just be due to my not having looked in the right place, or simple lack of knowledge. Overall, though, I'd say that they do well for the price they ask.

Thank you for responding.
I am located in the US. I did manage to get FTB Infinity Evolved up and running on my server, to see if it would work. I have an unlimited plan. After 2 days of the pack up and running with 0 issues (my husband and I tested it).. I was very happy. I have since taken it down, I get a bit confused on permissions. I do not want to step on the toes of those that work hard on these packs. I was thinking since the server provider I did choose allows for easy upload of FTB (and works!) using FileZilla and using the FTB launcher -that maybe I would use this set up. I was looking through and seen that I could create a Modpack, 3rd party, and send it in for approval. I just hate having to wait 72 hours.. I have been messing with this for days now. Though understood -things take time. I will be moving this new topic to the correct section to see about building a pack that is not too big (50 mods or so) but has what mods my family would like to use. My daughters computer will not run the "kitchen sink"... poor thing. Not to mention Infinity is great and I loved it. Sad to see it go.

An unlimited plan may seem like a lot for 6 or so family members ... it will do what I want today and offers possibilities for the future. As this game progresses -creators of mods/plugins/resource packs get bigger and better! Can't wait to see the future.

Thanks again for your responses, Peggyhill35

For public packs, you can host a server using it unless the pack author(s) say otherwise, if memory serves. Permissions only need be gathered if you're making a pack of your own. So, if you're hosting an Infinity server, you don't need to contact anyone for permissions (unless you do like my server and privately distribute an addon pack, but even then, its only for the mods you add to the pack), but if you went out and made one from scratch, you would need to gather permissions from mod authors that require it.

Looks like I am going to gather up permissions and follow the instructions according to authors. I do appreciate the explanation, that helped me a lot. I have always run my server on my computer (that was easy), I am new to the purchase of a server and creating a modpack. Love the forums and youtube hehe.

Appreciating those that build the modpacks!!!

Not a problem, man. I have at least some experience in the area...even if the full modpack I designed was thrown out. After months of work. With no warning. Tis why I run with just an addon pack, its far simpler.
