I'm going to have a stab in the dark and say you don't have Java installed or the incorrect version and the inital startup line doesn't do anything except say "can't find java".
Simple way to stop it from closing is to edit server start.bat and put pause underneath the java line so the cmd box stays there so you can see what it says.
