Server hosting specs

I've been getting a lot of mixed answers from other posts I have read, I'm looking to buy another PC just to host a server for a few friends and I. The modpack used is Infinity Evolved 2.3.3. What kind of machine, as far as CPU and RAM, would I need to host about 7 people max at a time?
 
for RAM I think having 4 GB of RAM dedicate at the server process (thus the server.jar) would probably be enough thus assuming you want the absolute minimum and go with windows you need to buy a computer that has 6 GB of RAM (4 for the server, 2 for the OS). However, I personally would go with a computer that has at least 8 GB of RAM this way you have some extra room to play with in case you want to give the server some extra functions (for example use it as a backup server or let it host a website)

as for the CPU Single core performance is more important then the amount of cores, a nice quad core CPU will be more then enough assuming it has a high clock speed.

if you can afford it go with an SSD instead of an HDD as it will likely improve the loading of chunks and starting it up (assuming nothing else is the bottleneck). However in my experience this isn't as important as the CPU and RAM

Well theres many types of ways but the best Desktop CPU atm ''what i know'' is a i7 4790k or the way older 2600k's you can overclock both or even a E3 1220-25-30-35-40v3's
for ram goes you will need the 8gb for the head room for both server and windows its self,
Storage well any type of SSD and a HHD of World Backups it might be expensive but see it from the bright side your nearly building a second pc for someone that might need it then you dont:)
 
Overclocking is not a problem. Running my 5960X on a cute 4000MHz as of now (I need another rad before i can move up a notch)

If you know how to overclock, then it`s easy.

Well, I don't think the ease of overclocking was being argued. :p But overclocking on a server that would be running 24/7 is less than ideal, even if you are almost completely sure it's stable.

Depends IMHO. I woulden`t overclock high. Like 4700-4800 unless you are running phase cooling or a waterchiller along with your rad.

These 5960X becomes more and more unstable when you pass 70¤C. So if you can keep it at 60-65¤C with a high OC you`re golden!
