I want to start a ftb server for about 20-30 people. And hosting isn't a great option. Does anyone know how much ram I will need. And the best server for me. I don't want lag. (Lol) however I don't want to be spending like 1k for it. Just looking for some suggestions. :)

That's how it is; if you want to make people happy and give them access to a 24/7 server.
But if you do do it; and by no means will it be over £/$50 a month; make them be nice, otherwise it's a kick then a ban! :)

So a 15gb server should suffice for 20-30 players?[DOUBLEPOST=1398261386][/DOUBLEPOST]
Ya. Lol. I get about 1gb/s download and 100mb/s upload speeds. My Internet is no the problem xD
15 Gigs SHOULD be good. Just get more whenever you can.

I know of a 192GB configuration but 287GB? that seems a bit far fetched. such an odd number too.

What about 287gb? xD

Your probably thinking of hard drive space, we are talking about memory. Unless you are running a blade server in your house, I seriously doubt you have any machine with more than 64 gigs of memory. If you want you could build a new machine to host the server for not a lot of money. What's your budget? Personally I would suggest the $600 range but can go higher or lower.

Ok. I know I can get servers from Dell with that much ram. But what about processors? What should be the best processor for a FTB server? Also. Internet speeds? Any suggestions?

Don't buy servers from a company for this. They charge an astronomical amount for the brand name and warranty. Building this yourself will provide a warranty on each piece and at a lower cost. As for processors, go with the fastest chip you can find on the 1150 socket. That would be the 4770K but the 4670K is almost the same for $100 cheaper. As for internet speeds, 100mbps should be enough. I would say anything above 50mbps would be enough but 100mbps is better. As for suggestions, the solid state drive was one of them. Its stupidly fast but could be overkill depending on your needs. You should make your backups to a different drive though, 30 people playing and generating new terrain could trash an SSD faster than a normal home user would.

I do understand where your coming. Not buying brand name servers. However money isn't much of a problem. And I'd prefer to buy from a company like dell. Where I can get 50% off from my companies discount. And I'd load it up with Linux. And go from there. And for the 50mb/s is that upload or download?

You said in your first post that money as somewhat of an issue, you didn't want to spent 1k on a server. Anyways, the 50mbps is the upload speed.

Ok. I did say that. But I know that if I didn't I would be getting replies about absurdly expensive servers. And I didn't want to spend 1k. But if need be. I could.

if your buying a brand-name server from Dell or HP or somebody. Prices start around $2k and go UP from there $5k - $15k - $300k

So if money is an issue -- your better off building a dedicated machine.
DZCreeper posted a good parts list. But I would go for a faster CPU like this one:

That chip is also quite nice but its also $100 more expensive and the single thread performance is about the same.

Why so slow? How about pushing 4.7 Ghz with an FX-8 9590 (8 core)?

Dear god no, don't get that terrible chip. Not only is it also $100 more expensive, it actually performs worse as far as Minecraft is concerned. It also consumes a mind boggling amount of power and I am not joking when I say it puts out enough heat to cook breakfast.

Agreed. You get what you paid for. Saying that. I have had no complaints with the FX-8320 chip that I am using. It barely produces any heat (14C at idle, 38C at capacity. Standard air cooling system).
