I can never quite find the right block I want to use for flooring. Well, actually I can, it would typically be one of the metals... iron or tin are good, but I just dont have enough of either to lay down entire floors with it, even if I microblock them down to covers.

Kind of related to the above problem is that I can never quite find a texture pack I'm entirely comfortable with. I want something smooth (many fit this bill) but not overly cartoony (the main problem) and above all, not too dark (seems to be another common problem).

Johnsmith Tech remix comes close, but it's way too dark. I like Sphax a lot, but too cartoony. Just can't find one that I like.

As for the particulars of design... I'm building a base that's intended to have a "sci-fi" or star-warsy feel to it. I actually laid down an entire 16x16 room with tin covers and it looks pretty good (especially with one of the texturepacks that adds bolts on the edges... I think it was Isabella) but as I said, I'm hoping to find some other options. I also tried concrete, which I like for its smoothness, but I want something lighter. Sigh... maybe just too picky. :)

Suggestions/advice welcome.

Sounds like you might want to place double stone half blocks. Result is a colour and texture very much like iron, but far cheaper to mass produce.

You could make a nice imperial outpost, I second this. Also dye your leather armor grey.

I use Sphax for FTB playing. I became too used to it with Tekkit. But since you don't want one too dark, or too cartoony Soartex Fanver. It is slightly incomplete (armor is missing), or Faithful. Since I use Sphax the chiseled stone bricks look great as a floor. I would suggest stone slabs, but you want something sci fi. I think your best bet would either be mazestone or iron blocks. Just set up a Quarry and you will be set on iron for a while. Also, how large are you building? That could be helpful information.

Aluminum blocks may fit your taste as well. You would still need a TON of it most likely, but it doesn't have much of a use yet anyway. ;)
(Yes yes, glass viewers. But you can use iron there too, and either way you don't need very much of it in most cases.)

Yeah, so as for the stone slabs, I do like the "cleanliness" of them, but stone says dungeon more than it says imperial base. To me, anyway.

As for Soartex, it is good, I tried it for a bit, but got some weird visual results... I might post some pics at some point. Aluminum blocks (both Xycraft and Gregtech) are perfect, but yeah... finding mass quantities of them is the problem. Mazestone is actually something I hadn't considered... hmm, I'll try that out. Also, the aluminum from Xycraft is very useful for one other thing: aluminum torches. Which look much better than wood torches, and a bit like a lightsaber. :)

Here are some pics of the entrance to the base, and "the shaft"... I wanted to make something that looks like one of these scenes you see in the star wars movies, where there's like a massive trench or shaft stretching into space, with tubes and pipes and lights and so on... it's a work in progress. :)

In the first pic, btw, that's all concrete (I think it's Gregtech concrete, or IC2 or whatever... rebar + stone).

You could use some Lead Blocks for some parts. Also disk drives from AE.

Lead blocks: good idea, I hadn't thought of lead at all. It looks techy, but it's dark, so I'll probably use it only for accents/variety.

AE drives: look great, but too expensive... but you gave me a great idea! Computercraft disk drives! They are perfect. 7 stone and 2 redstone dust is affordable, and it's smooth and looks great. Awesome, thanks. :)

Ah, I totally forgot about the torches.
Fortunately some of these other recent suggestions have been quite good IMO. Go team! :p

Iron scaffolding doesn't look anywhere as cool in default texture pack though.

For lights, why not go for the IC2 ones (luminators)?

They look quite nice on industrial style.
