This is based on a tutorial found on the Internet. It was invaluable for getting me going on Thaumcraft - without it I would still be struggling to figure out how to make a greatwood wand.

In order to do anything in Thaumcraft, you need to collect magical aspects. That's done by constructing a Thaumometer and scanning everything you can think of. The following 2 lists will get you at least some of all the aspects.

I haven't listed which aspects are conferred by which scans. Just scan everything on the list, and you'll be golden. Also, this is not the smallest possible list. There are some unnecessary items. That's OK, though, you want to scan everything you can, because doing research on topics consumes them - so you need to amass more and more aspects throughout the game.

The first list is an ordered list. This is because you cannot scan something that has a compound aspect (an aspect made of two or more other aspects) if you don't already know the component aspects. For example, Mortuus is made of Victus and Perdito. If you scan something with Mortuus before you scan something with Victus and Perdito, it will fail. A message will give you some cryptic message to study "the origins of life" or "food". The ordered list ensures that primal aspects are scanned first, and compound aspects are only scanned after their components have been scanned, which prevents errors and messages thus speeding up the process.

To "research" a new aspect, go to your research table. Compound aspects are made of two component aspects. You must select the component aspects, in order. They will populate in the appropriate slots in the bottom of the research table. Once both of the component aspects are in place, click the button between them. That will take one point of each component aspect away, and add one point of the new aspect.

Note that this is repeatable, but you will use up the component aspects in a 1+1 to 1 ratio.

Good luck.

List 1 - Scan these items in this order. Where is says to research, do this in your Research Table, and select the aspects in the order specified.
  1. Torch
  2. Stone
  3. Cobblestone
  4. Coal/Coal ore
  5. Bowl
  6. Research – Aqua & Terra (in that order)
  7. Seeds
  8. Grass
  9. Glass Block
  10. Wood
  11. Leaves
  12. Trapdoor
  13. Iron/Iron ore
  14. Potion of Weakness
  15. Research – Victus & Perditio (in that order)
  16. Moss Stone
  17. Sandstone
  18. Chicken
  19. Soulsand
  20. Netherrack
  21. Netherquartz/Nethquartz ore
  22. Paper
  23. Rotten Flesh
  24. Flint
  25. Wool
  26. Milk Bucket
  27. Apple
  28. Cake
  29. Obsidian

List 2 - Scan these items in any order. As before, where it says to research, do that in your Research Table and select the aspects in the order specified.
  • Snow/Ice
  • Obsidian Totems
  • Diamond/Diamond Ore
  • Gold Ingot
  • Gold Ore
  • Slime
  • Gate (Fence)
  • Ethereal Essence
  • Zombie
  • Skeleton
  • Spider Eye
  • Hoe
  • Arrow
  • Leather/Armor
  • Pickaxe
  • Tainted Goo
  • Research – Aero & Aqua (in that order)
Above, we stated that "researching" aspects is repeatable. This is important, because if you're trying to learn a new skill in the Thauminomicon and do not have enough of the right aspects, you can go to your research table and use up component aspects to make the aspects you need. For example - if you're out of Mortuus, you can make more by selecting first Victus and then Perdito. They will show up at the bottom of your research table in appropriate slots. A button will appear between them. When you click it, it will create 1 Mortuus, but use up 1 Victus and 1 Perdito.

But what if you run out of Victus? Well, you can replenish Victus by "researching" it over and over too. Eventually, you go back to the 6 primal aspects. Victus, for example, is made of Aqua and Terra, in that order. All the aspects can be made by some advanced, progressive combination of primal aspects.

So what if you're running out of primal aspects? Not to fear. Go and find Aura Nodes. When you scan Aura Nodes, you pick up a boatload of primal aspect points, which you can spend building up other aspects in the Research Table.

I hope this is helpful for fledgling Thaumcrafters.
