Okay so FTB is in BETA now, but im curious with the mod api coming soon and various changes, updates to minecraft etc does this mean we are going to lose our save games each time a mod updates something?

Or is the idea to make everything compatible before releasing each update?

Thanks,

Nytician!

The general cycle is vanilla updates, and depending on the size and content of the update the modders take a few months to get releases out for the new version. So at the minute, seeing as we haven't even got all the mods for 1.4 yet I think there's gonna be a while left in the current iteration. I don't know if the mod api will even be used by most forge modders as they already have a perfectly good one already made. I somehow doubt mods like Redpower will be anywhere near supported by Mojang's offering anyway, so I don't know how it will effect Forge or if it will at all.

Usually most of the modders make things compatible from previous versions unless they're doing a complete rewrite so I think worlds should carry over OK, there's always the problem of generating new ores/terrain features with updates though. However be prepared to not be able to play your world in a new update at some point, probably not soon but eventually things get too outdated to bother carrying on. I still play my 1.2.5 world a bit, there's no reason you can't keep a copy of the last version of FTB that works with your map.

Provided FTB doesn't futz with Item IDs as they shuffle mods, your worlds should remain compatible henceforth. The issues might come if mods are removed from the pack or the IDs get changed. I, however, am not a prophet, so I make no guarantees. =)

As for the Mod API and "Soon"... you forgot a ™ on that as it's a Blizzard "Soon™". 1.5 isn't going to be the API either. Estimates are that we might get the very beginnings of an official Mod API in some kind of skeletal form with 1.6 at this point. It's getting to the point of a running gag at this point whenever somebody proclaims it's coming (considering it was supposed to come in 1.3... no wait, 1.4... no, wait, 1.5... nope, not that either...).
