TheNewBoston series is very good for learning java, Pahimar's Let's Mod Reboot is very good for learning about basic modding after having learned the java.

I would assume that they're talking about coding style, which would be things like having a method named do_stuff in Java.

Mostly not capitalizing class names, from what I can recall.
