I see many people around the forums talking about needing copper to run a nuclear reactor but iv never actually known what is needed to run a nuclear setup so my question is what is needed to keep a nuclear reactor running ? With an output of about 512eu ?

The copper cost comes from the fact that you need copper to craft single cells into multi-cells, which let you have higher power density and efficiency. Obviously if you only use single cells, then you won't need any copper. You will still need tin and uranium for the cells, though. There's no way around that.

Also, if you are using condensators, you'll need either redstone or lapis lazuli to reacharge them.

It should also be noted that the assembly cost of a solid reactor can be quite staggering, reaching over a thousand bars in many cases. More complex designs, multiply that by 10 or 20.

If using gregtech, people tend to use a portion of their power generation to generate lava for ore centrifuging. It can keep up with the ore consumption of a reactor (minus uranium) but is a bit involved in setup and matching reactor demands efficiently without too much excess.

There's also a nontrivial coal cost when breeding uranium and using uranium reactors, which is highly recommended as its the most limiting resource.
