If you mean there are evil overlords watching your every move, you'll have to find out. By the way the story has been revealed more than you think through subtle hints, anything that seems strange like there not being any supplies probably isn't a coincidence. Oh, and don't forget tord's "moment" early on.

Everyone has seperate ships. But since you've come in the game so close to eachother you'll find the other one next to you.

The map is the same as the scanners, your brain just interprets it as a map because you don't know what scanners are.
