I have recently looked at the factorization router. I was wondering if i could make a sorting system out of them.

I don't exactly know how i will exactly make this but, that is why I came here :D
Pics help alot.
(Going to be on a server if that means anything)

My finished product sorting is now just completed.

put a relay 1 tube back from a router (keep router/relay somewhere handy so you can clear out jams. And then connect your sorting output to the relay (it acts as buffer) since its 1 tube behind the router, the router won't see it as an inventory and will go along its merry way sorting into barrels. Keep barrels connected and put 1 cobble or something into unseen barrels.

Another way is to put the relay right next to the router. The router will bounce items occasionally into the relay to be resorted into barrels. This causes more "instance" of routing (twice as much activity for the router to process as there's always 2 possible inventories for it to route to).. but if an item has no home in the barrels it will indefinitely bounce between the router and relay and the system will continue to sort other items So long as they end up in the first slot (this is how my last system worked with a GT buffer).

You can also use a machine filter to exclusively route to barrels, which works like a charm if you want chests mixed into your warehouse.

In any case, all barrels in your system must have at least 1 of the item you wish sorted into them. so if you have unused barrels (for now), put a cobble in them.

I wish routers would emit a redstone signal when an item has no home.. so you can use that redstone to power a gate/transposer to suck out the item into a overflow chest.

It depends on what kind of sorting you are trying for. A single router can do the most basic of sorting (like sorting into barrels) but other than that you would need a ridiculous amount of them to work and trust me I worked with them for hours to see what I could do. I made an auto factorization ore processing thing with them (multiple versions) etc but honestly they were made for sorting into barrels.
I would suggest (as I have in on a server) some sort of sorting system (I am using RP2) and have the "default" or "no other place to go" route go into the router to be sorted (I have the processed items sorted off to the side)

Here is a basic thing of what would happen. I may make another video of my other sorting system sometime when I can get on the server.
I hope this helps!
