I know. I had been doing that for the oreberries and essenceberries until I found out that the Harvester works - I thought with 80 oreberry bushes it's worth a try. Do Harvesters work with Magical Crops?

@trajing:
What's "MF2"?

Magical crops: harvester yes, planter yes, fertilizer no.

MF2 is Magic Farm 2, it's another modpack, pretty tough one :)

Here's a daft rotarycraft question, what's the best way to farm canola seeds for lubricant? Usually I have little need of it since I start RC later in playthroughs and make a beeline right for the bedrock breaker, but I just started a new world and i'm trying to incorporate RC stuff a bit earlier this time.

I've got a few seeds from breaking long grass but i'm not sure what to do with 'em

What's easy to do is to power a RoC fan on a single line of canolla seeds (that's sufficient, canolla seeds give a lot of canolla when harvested). A RoC fan can easily be powered by a single steam engine which is self-sustaining. Then you can put an item vacuum (or vacuum hopper from Open Blocks if you so prefer) to collect the canolla seeds then send that to a grinder to make the lubricant. All these things can be powered with steam engines so that's pretty easy to do early game.

I may be mistaken but I think harvesters do work but they don't get extra seeds and some of the other extras that manually harvesting crops can sometimes give you. The only thing (besides autonomous activator) that I know can harvest magical crops WITH extras is RotaryCraft and that only with the very latest version (23d). Older versions of RotaryCraft could also harvest some of the magical crops but not all.

Well the config of magical crops in Monster is such that you won't normally get extra seeds off them even with manually harvesting. But yeah the MFR harvester doesn't seem to pick up nature essence and I *think* it has a bit of trouble with the normal food crops from magical crops (cucumbers and chillis and suchlike) but the essence crops harvest just fine :)

A Thaumcraft golem farm works best. Use a Harvesting golem with an order upgrade so that it replants harvested seeds, and use a Gathering golem with an air upgrade (for speed) to pick up the rest. You will only need a comparably small farm for all your lubricant needs unless you''re using excessive numbers of non-bedrock gearboxes over a long time. The grinding is the bottleneck here. It's extremely slow at the lowest power requirements and since RoC machines only increase their speed on a logarithmic scale more power will have limited benefits.

In fact, I'm using golems in all my farms (excepting the oreberries, I haven't tried that yet). Farms for plants that sometimes drop zero seeds (like wheat, so far the only one) but are harvested completely and need to be replanted have to be supported by a Planter (if it works), but for the harvesting golems work very well.

The reason I did that was that I didn't want noisy engines near my farms, and the fan system of harvesting doesn't appeal to me at all.

Edit:
I guess nobody knows a way to run an RoC Fermenter at optimal temperature except "move it somewhere else"? Which is exactly what I do not want to do. At least unless it means moving somewhere else underground.

This. For completeness' sake I'd like to add that a fan can harvest 3 wide if you need it and at least 18 long when powered by a steam engine.
And a warning: fans also spread fire. Yes, I know that by experience (as everybody who watches the derp thread knows).

Wasn't it that the fans harvest 3 wide, but only push 1 wide?

Not sure but if your item vacuum is strong enough that doesn't matter much as it will suck it up anyway.

hmm. what would be more efficient (Material wise), 2 more fans (Bonus points for powering all 3 with the same steam engine through shaft junctions), or an extra item vacuum?

I'm personally not using item vacuums as I find it a bit annoying that they suck up items all over your base (i.e. they have a pretty big range and items are sucked in by tem from a long distance). I'm using vacuum hoppers from open blocks instead. They are limited in range but I put a few around the farm.

Agreed, much easier to setup. After relocating my farm I switched to advanced item collectors though.

Remind me, what mod do advanced item collectors come from? (Or better question, is it native to Horizons)

I'm really excited that more crops are now harvestable by fans (noted by @McJty above). Not sure if its "all" crops, but I was at least able to move the remainder of my farm to fans as of v23d.

Random Things, which is in Horizons iirc.
