I have always had hoppers on my pedestals. Ever since someone trolled Direwolf20 in SMP by putting a turtle under centre of the infusion altar to steal his item and replace it with a book, it occurred to me that they are all just inventories. I guess you could probably automate the whole infusion crafting process with a wand turtle (if those still exist).

Noo.... !

There are some things which simply should not be automated, for to automate would be spoiling/neutering the experience. But, that's my (strong) opinion.

Others have different opinions.

I think there may be a greater need for an infusion guide... Anyway using redundant items on the pedestals is possible at nearly all progression levels and is at any rate better than keeping them ready in your inventory a-la direwolf.

I've been placing 12 pedestals around my altar. 12 is a good number since it's even divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6, which makes balancing easy. There's also plenty of space for spare items to be placed after starting the Infusion.

1 pedestal at a corner, one(1) 45 degree diagonal block away from the pillar.
2 pedestal at a side, each two(2) blocks away from the pillar.
1 space between each pedestal.
Repeat 3 more times around altar to make a circular pattern

Autonomous activator with wand right click

BTW ME interface into chest + with a timer and dark cable for infusion time + round robin pipe + essentia method of choice (D20's mana bean) + a seperate interface for the middle makes automation fairly simple

Wait if the pedestals are inventories then could you rig your infusion alter up to your AE system? As the only Thauma guy I sometimes have to process multiple item requests....

... but ...but that is the way I do complex infusions as well. Sometimes golems instead of hoppers if I'm feeling cheeky.
I'd say Hoppers are clearly more cheeky than golems. A little guy placing items on a pedestal makes sense. I just find that golems can't work their way around the "clutter" of heads and candles. As to AE or any other piping system, getting the right item into the right pedestal would be a pain, you'd have to keep reconfiguring the export bus whenever you set up an infusion.

Candle spam works beautifully in TC 4.1, btw. I put (just) 24 candles 1 layer beneath my Altar and I haven't experienced a single instability "event", including a flawless Silverwood wand core infusion. Haven't tried a Dangerous one yet like the [TT] Osmotic Enchanter.

With alchemy golems taking front stage in TC 4.1, I'll be flattening my altar floor, including putting the pedestals at Y-1 so their tops are flush with the floor. Will be challenge to keep the golems from trying to path through the center of the altar and then getting stuck. Maybe some crystal clusters or nitor to block the path and encourage them to go around...

Like one of Reika's beasts from below spawning at every hopper ?

Yeah, I prefer to build my Altar the "correct" way. It just looks better and I'm happier in the long run.

Ya know when ever someone says something like "the correct way of doing something" in minecraft I have the sudden urge to smack them. The whole idea that there is a single correct way of doing something mine minecraft it's just, just wrong.

If I considered it cheating I wouldn't have made them accessible by hoppers and such. Heck, I spent an hour getting them to interact properly with golems.
I just thought it was funny how it seems to be a set system but you actually put in a way to semi-automate(wand auto please :D) it with just TC4
