Dear fellow FTB'ers,

Since you play the modded game Iike myself, I figured this would be as good a place as any to ask. I've been playing modded MC for a ittle while now but ever since the 1.4.6 + mods I've been experiencing lag, or sudden drops in FPS to 2 FPS (normally I play with 60 FPS throughout both in MC and WoW for example).

My current system runs on 4Gb RAM and an i5 760 CPU. I don't mind very much upgrading parts of my system but perhaps fellow FTB'ers can first enlighten me as to whether it would actually help.

At the moment I've disabled Redwood from the ExtraBiomes mod. Due to reports on Optifine being buggy I've not tried that yet...

Any help/information appreciated.

Kind regards,
Bel*.

Your mileage may vary, but as far as I've seen OptiFine isn't buggy. The worst OptiFine bug I had (which I then helped other people fix later) was where pieces of engines, barrels, etc, would disappear, and mobs would render with weird textures. This was (rather simply, actually) fixed by just changing OptiFine versions.

OptiFine is really a good thing to have anyway--even if your machine is forged of godly materials unfamiliar to mortal men, it does a lot of rummaging around in the back to fix some of Minecraft's problems that cause needless FPS drops and inefficiency (such as stopping spastic autosaving).

The only kick in the pants you'll really take is a lack of see-through portals for PortalGun, although iirc those currently aren't implemented in 1.4.6 anyhoo.

I mean, if your game is having FPS issues OptiFine is at least worth a try. If it doesn't work, fine, but you should at least mess with it--it works wonders.

  • I would recommend having a 2nd or 3rd generation i5 processor. In fact, even an i3 would do.
  • RAM is so cheap these days, you can easily buy 8GB.
  • Finally, I would invest on a decent GPU - a HD7750 or a GTX650Ti.

Thanks for the input so far folks. I'll give Optifine another try then I suppose.

I have to say I find it really strange that I should have this FPS lag seeing as I am able to play WoW in 25-man raids on 60fps and ultra settings.

Might look into adding some more RAM though I'm. Not a huge fan of doing that since I'd have to remove the CPU-fan attached to my Scythe Mugen II CPU-cooler in order to get to my RAM-slots...

The joys of building PCs I suppose lol.

P.S.: cannot remember the exact details of my GPU but it's not incredibly old, supports DX11 (perhaps not used by MC but meh) and has 1Gb of RAM.
