For a completely different experience, I recommend Sprout by @thephoenixlodge (creator of Regrowth, although this is totally not that). I recommend playing with Scavenger Mode for the full feel, which leaves armor and many other things uncraftable and needing to be found in the world.
Played Age of Engineering? Future's Edge was kind of interesting as well. Both pretty hard packs without being obscene. (Okay, FE's a bit nuts.)
Age of Engineering is my current pack. Very interesting as the tech nesting it uses forces you to dig deeper into some mods than they have in a long time due to needing obscure machines to get basic components for "higher" tech machines.
