I actually sort of like Thaumcraft's research system. Its got this funny random prioritization system that means people branch in very different directions post T1, but have nearly identical T1 experiences. I have nearly all my research done, but had not managed to get a few key items to show up, whereas my friend has only just started on T2 and has those done immediately.

Someone else tried to start TC but just couldn't get over the research system and backed out. While that's not an optimal experience, I sort of felt like it was a good thing. Magic is rough.

The only addition the system needs, in my opinion, is better collaboration tools. Like if my friend and I collaborated on a topic we should be able to both receive a result and do it faster. It could cost more resources but take less time for everyone.

OT but its steal...
Anyway, a research based tech mod sounds like an idea. Maybe like villages that are at different level of tech that you can trade with to get blue prints. They have machines around the villages showing what level they are. (machines can't be broken though to remove the cheaty people from just stealing them xD)

Na let them be broken. But make then not dorp the machine but maybe just some of the mats.
