Hey there, I just have a few questions, most are probably silly, stupid and extremely ignorant, but it can't hurt to ask. A few relate to how they do certain things on the forgecraft 1/2 servers that direwolf20 makes episodes on. And yes I know there's a forum for this but I had a thread up for multiple days with no responses so I figured I'd come here instead.
  1. How do they tp people cross dimensional with mystcraft? For example in vanilla someone types in /tp Bob Landswimmer from the overworld to the nether and it says " Can't tp cross-dimensionally " but on their forgecraft server it allows them to using mystcraft somehow. If anyone knows and could tell me that'd be great.
  2. How do they do auto-backups and such? I know they use creeperhost and it's most likely just a feature of them hosting it but are there any ways I can auto backup on my own home server?
  3. Is there a way make my dynamic IP a static one? Or do something like have my ip address be "Landswimmer.wehoststuff.com"? I've seen that as well and I can't seem to find a way to do it within my router settings.
  4. I've tried tickthreading but every time I use it my server acts wonky, is there a fix or does it just come inherently with the mod?
  5. And if there's any tips or ideas or any help you could give me to host a better server, be it advice, guides or anything of the sort would be very appreciated.

1. They use /tpx instead of /tp. Thats why it works cross dimensionally.

1. The mystcraft command tpx. It allows tp over different dimensions (in order to teleport to absolutes, you need to specify dimension ID aswell as coordinates).
2. The backups are likely some custom system, or possibly one of the plugins. I'd guess custom, given the environment that they're in.
3. Only by buying it from your ISP. There are a number of domain tools to auto-update a domain name when an IP changes, but ISPs use dynamic addresses with their connections for a reason. Statics typically cost an extra £5ish/month (adjust for country).
4. Not used that one, sorry.
5. Not hosted a multi-player server, only one for me.

3. Dynamic IP to static ... You need to contact your IP provider and tell them that's what you want (assuming your server is at home and on your own computer/IP). If it is through a third party hosting your game, you just need to choose one that offers static IP's, or if you already have a host contact them to ask them what the cost would be/if they offer it.

Ah I should've payed more attention during the videos for #1.
Oh and Bibble I mean more performance/backing up/security sort of things, in case you know anything.
And thanks for the help guys.

Well I'll help If I can.
1. I'm not sure. Might be a config option or mod/admin/server console command.
2. Most of the time you have to write a backup script and set it to auto execute at certain times. What OS are you using for your server?
3. I use http://www.noip.com/ the free account should do what you need.
4. never used it.
5. My personal recommendation (I admit I'm biased here), is to use MineOS Crux, It has a web interface and would allow you to manage your server, including automated backups.

As I said, I only have solo experience, but I would probably say to keep an eye on anything that would be popular and performance-heavy. Things like Soulshards and (unfortunately) RedPower, and other Tile Entity based mods.

As far as I can tell, AE and factorisation's item transport system is better for the server than tubes/pipes (if not as prettey). Other than that, and that hosting it on an always-on machine would be better than hosting on a home machine (with things like CC playing up after restarts). That's just the stuff I've either picked up from play, or from hanging around this place for a while.

I'm using linux, I did try to use MineOS Crux once but I couldn't get it to work properly for whatever reason. Could try it again.. I'm going to go look at the features again to see if it's worth it.

Well it's just a desktop and it is on all the time. I do give it a rest here and there but it seems to be fine so far. It has a good fan and airflow to keep it cool.

The biggest problem I've had with MineOS/FTB is the fact they change the server pack names with every update making MineOS push button update feature useless. As well as having to use bit.ly to give me a URL w/out strange characters so MineOS's web interface doesn't choke while trying to DL the damn server pack.

The biggest benefit is that it has a very small memory footprint (25 MB if I remember correctly) Saving lots of resources for your MC instances.
