Ranchers are killing my squids

whenever i put a squid into the ranchers, the moment i turn it on it kills the squid. is this supposed to happen? or am i doing something wrong?

Taking a stab in the dark, are you sure they're not "drowning" from air exposure?

Make sure there aren't any empty spaces above the water. Squid are dumb and like to float up out of the water and air drown themselves.

This may seem silly, but in addition to the above suggestions - I assume you're actually using a rancher and didn't build a slaughterhouse by mistake?
Regardless, it is definitely supposed to work. I run one of my bases on squid power (in Unleashed BTW).
