In a fit of genius, I built this to keep my ME storage from becoming a crater. (Not for high efficiency breeder reactors, of course.)

I hope it helps someone, or at least makes them laugh.

Given how often my experimental reactors blow up, this could be a cheap way of stopping them from exploding half my base again. Though most of my reactors produce enough heat to explode after just a few ticks if the cooling goes awry. Still, a really neat idea.

I just used a squirrel because it has 1 hp, and I had a few poke... erm... Safari Balls. The second the reactor shoots one tick of radiation, it dies and shuts the whole thing down. You could use any creature, and pre-damage them if you wanted it to shut down quickly. Also, the piston is powered by the pressure plate the animal is standing on, so pushing/pokeballing the creature into the cage seals it until the squirrel has a tragic accident.

I considered using a yellow bird from Twilight Forest (canary!), but I wasn't sure if it would stay on the pressure plate constantly.

Also, no squirrels harmed in the making of this picture. Yet.

is there a danger in just using a unhurt pig or cow?

At 70% hull heat entities start taking damage, at 85% things start turning into lava (and of course at 100% it explodes). I don't know if there is a set up that could go from 70% to 85 or 100 faster than a cow would die from radiation but if there is then that would be a danger.

I did some testing. If you leave your reactor completely uncooled (that's not cool) with any more than two adjacent quad cells, it will crater before killing the cow. If you're smarter than the cow, you will not be running uncooled quad cells.
