I've been working my way through research in Thaumcraft so I can ultimately make a Brain in a Jar for my XP farm, but I'm not sure exactly how researching works. It seems to be working it's way through the tree systematically and cycling back for "tiers" of each sort of upgrade. For reference, I've just finished researching all of the magical tools attributed to the second-tier wands (Pick of the Core, Sword of the Zephyr, etc).

Every time I complete a set of research notes, I spam some Xychlorium to try and get a 'crystal' attribute into the table which I hope will point me towards the brain in the jar, but that doesn't seem to work...the table seems to have a different set of notes in mind each time. Can somebody fill me in on how this works and how long I could expect it to take before I can research Brain in a Jar?

P.S. I tried putting the Brain in a Jar recipe directly into the infusion table, but that didn't register so I gather you need to research Thaumcraft items first before you can craft them.

You must indeed complete the research before you can create the item.

IIRC the brain in a jar has an evil aspect associated with its research, and given that not many other items do, that's probably a good one to concentrate on. Its construction requires cogito (learning/knowledge) as well, so you probably want to be throwing brains into the research table.

You must research the warded jar first, however (containers are a good bet for that). If you get a research note that's unrelated to what you want, it's usually best to fully research it anyway. Otherwise you risk getting duplicates of that same note.

Cool, I have tons of paper so I'll try that first instead from now on. What are some common items that have Evil aspects? I don't really know all of the icons yet, I will probably finish it before I understand them all lol

I did finish research for Warded Jars a while ago, which is why I started to wonder when I was going to get the next "tier" for that research. Assuming it even works that way. I guess I'll just keep at it, I'm planning on finishing the research anyway so I figure I'll get the jars at some point.

Well, I've learned that I wasted a stack and a half of Slimeballs using them for their Flux aspect...I can't believe I never researched Netherwart lol

And it seems that Zombie Brains are the cheapest item for Evil/Malum research...I hope there aren't too many of those. I only have about 30 I think, got a bunch of heads but I'd rather not use them and I need to keep 4 brains for the jars. Don't want to farm zombie brains if I can avoid it!

My last (unrelated) problem is Alienis (Ender?) research...I've used up all of my Ender Pearls and I've only just realised that those totems are good for something. I figure my best bet is to get to the End and get a ton of pearls? I'm surprised End Stone isn't in the list...

Will angry zombies spawn from a regular zombie soul cage? And will they drop brains if they die from fall/fire damage, or do they need to be killed by a player?

Pretty sure they don't spawn from regular spawners. Brains only drop from players. Turtles may work?

You got EE3? Ender Pearls are easy to get with a minium stone.

So I would need an Angry Zombie XP trap to get large amounts of brains...not sure if that's going to be worth the time it would take to build and acquire the shard. I would probably use it once and then abandon it once I'd made my jars.

I haven't figured out Equivalent Exchange yet but I figure that I can look into it if anything is too difficult to acquire...I'd rather not make it my first port of call though, or I won't have any reason to mine or go out massacring monsters any more. I like going out on supply expeditions from time to time. I live right next to a Savannah too, so Endermen aren't difficult to find at night.

After you kill the dragon in the end, just make a little 2 high room with no walls 6x6 or so, look at a bunch of endermen, and jab em in the feet with the RP2 dagger. ..Just don't get too close to the edge. Ender Pearls for days. EE3 is pretty easy to start, 4 iron ingots, 1 gold, 4 smooth stone, and 8 mimium shards. The shards are a kinda-rare drop from mobs, so it's not too easy.

Turns out I only had a few more notes to complete before I got Warded Jars. Stoked! I've got four of 'em sitting at the base of my Blaze farm and I can fill 'em all in a few minutes...now it's onto making a perfect set of Thaumic gear.

Thanks for the help guys :D
