wasnt sure if this should go in tech suppor section, or if that is just for real errors.

My buddy who runs my server left gregtech installed when he decided to try FTB Ultimate. It changes recipes... did it change steel? Ive yet to play with steel, havent been playing too long yet.

It says there is a shaped crafting recipe where you make Basic Plating, it shows the Plating in the crafting grid, and 5 steel on the output square. Basic plating is made with one wire from the Modular Powersuits and 5 Iron ingots.

Anyway, the crafting of basic plating into steel doesnt work, it just gives you 5 iron back, and you lose the Modular Powersuits wire.

is this a bug, and if not, why is that recipe in there?

Side question: what is the point of putting gregtech in the ftb pack if there are other options from othe rmods? I can't make a macerator early, so i use a pulverizer. Gregtech only really slows down IC2 specific things, like quantum armor. Isnt the point of gregtech kind of negated, if other mods still offer cheap options?

This is a touhchy subject because people take it too far and don't want to actually discuss it, but Gregtech is for servers. Apparently getting to "endgame" in a sandbox game too early is bad, so Gregtech makes everything take longer. And as to why it's in a pack where the main point is to have as many other mods as possible when gregtech disables those mods, I have no idea. The Powersuits problem may have something to do with the config for the powersuits.

Gregtech offers a significant increase in the resources required (energy and material) as well as the time required.

For those who play FTB in a different way, this extra challenge might be what it takes to make the game fun. It makes efficiency, etc. all the more valuable. Though you could design highly efficient systems without Gregtech and achieve much more, the achievement in playing hardmode in itself is fun for some.

It may not be for others and that is where most of the bitching back and forth comes from. Play FTB how you want to play it, fuck anything else.

The basic plating crafting-uncrafting is weird. I thought this was an error when I first made iron basic plating, I tried to turn it into titanium... I figured this out instantly and I am at endgame and still have that wire in a chest somewhere. The metals you get back depend on the metals you put it, therefore if you made an iron plating, you get iron back, (a waste of resources for the wire). To make steel you need to use a blast furnace.

About GregTech, I personally do not care about expense. I love IC2 AND GT. A lot. I became in love with it this previous world when I first used it. I've used pulverizers, but I find MJ harder to manage than EU. I also like the Sphax IC2 and GT textures more than the TE textures.

From what I can tell this has nothing to do with gregtech as he does not touch modular power suits in any way. As for the gregtech recipes those were created by the author of MPS with a few suggestions from users as they felt appropriately gregtechy. Now for the recipes to convert plating back to its base items that was intentional setup to block resource conversions despite what the recipes say. The way it does this is that each recipe for the plating produces its own unique version of it so that when you try to recycle it you will always get back the same resources that you put into it.

Edit: As for the point of gregtech in the ftb packs, that one is very clear to me, It is to drive people from the standard norm of playing and encourage them to explore beyond it. By encouraging them to build larger and more complex machines to meet its demands.

For example if your in need of copper, tin and iron you could go mining over and over again or you can build a few centrifuges and electrolyzers to process lava and obsidian into a unlimited supply. Now to power them you will need to build out a rather substantial power network let alone the machinery to keep them fueled with lava. Which in turn can come from a lava pump or for a more complex unlimited source you can build a MJ powered array of magma crucibles to melt down cobble or nether rack.

Which as far as I am concerned is a rather rewarding yet time consuming process made possible by the mix of mods present in the FTB packs.

Another little known fact about gregtech is it allows you to manufacturer forestry fertilizer and no i do not mean the fertilizer from IC2 as that is a different process.
