so as long im not making money i can go for it, from what i understand. but what happens if i ask for donations, that counts as monetizing right?

Sortof. Its a grey area right now actually. It depends on what sort of content youre providing. If its just game footage you may be more into the darker grey area. If youre making a lot of commentary and can justifiably say people are donating/paying/etc to listen to you play videogames then youd be at the other end. Id be less concerned with the mod permission and more with Mojang, or other game companies themselves. Most modders simply want people to not spread their work without consent, so as long as you dont provide a home-made unofficial modpack along with the streams or tell people how you created all these fantastic mods you should be fine.

It's not a grey area at all. You can absolutely monetize minecraft videos. From Mojang's terms: "Other than commercial use (unless specifically authorized by us in our brand and assets usage guidelines - for instance you are allowed to put ads on your YouTube videos containing Minecraft footage),"

In regards to what you can and cannot do with our brand read these Do's and Don'ts from the Media Page of our website:

Guidelines for content creators

Do:
  • Use the official unmodified FTB logo to show that you are referencing FTB
  • Allow sufficient buffer space around the FTB logo
  • Feel free to stream or play FTB on youtube twitch or similar while linking into our site so your viewers can easily find what you are playing!
  • Create a unique brand that can easily be identified by your users separately from the FTB brand
Don't:
  • Modify or alter anything that can be directly associated to FTB in any way that could cause FTB to be confused with another brand
And:

You should not use this as the branding for your site, create your own unique brand and contact us here if you want to use the logo on your site.
You are free to use the logo on your youtube or twitch channel or videos unless you are notified otherwise by the FTB team as long as you don't make any claim to creating FTB.

As for Minecraft, we cannot speak for them, instead read their Terms of Use and Minecraft Name, Brand and Assets Usage Guidelines.

You realize 1. He is not just playing vanilla MC 2. Mojang can change those terms at anytime retroactively. GREY AREA. Nothing I said was false. He should go into it informed.

I wasn't meaning to belittle your post, merely to point out that Mojang has made a clear statement on the issue. While they could conceivably change their position at some time in the future, the possibility of such a stupid move on their part seems remote, at best. Regarding your point that he's playing modded MC, that doesn't pertain to the issue, as mod licenses/copyrights can only apply to their original code and its distribution, as they are derivative works.
