Can pipes be attached to them? I tried wooden and cobblestone transport pipes and they don't connect.

Nope. You need a tubes, a chest, or you could put a relay, which pipes will connect to.

you can do it the old fashioned way from 1.2.5 challenge map days which is an obsidian transport pipe a blcok away from the block breaker. It'll catch the block and send it into the system. thats no use on frames i don't think though
