Is there any way I can edit the ore generation? So I can have ores spawn everywhere, and a lot of them. There's not always a lot of ores around and I was wondering if I could change that. Thanks!

Ore generation can be either customized with the COFH configs, or Metallurgy 3. (If you are playing Direwolf 1.6.4 or Monster, most likely COFH). Navigate to where your COFH config folder is, open it, and navigate to the "world.cfg" file, and toy with it as you please.

1.4.7 is 2 entire versions out of date. Not even sure if 1.5 COFH has worldgen options.

Just use a 1.6 pack, like Monster

You can, but that doesn't mean it will work. Some people have gotten it to work, but quite a few haven't. It's not recommended to use it.

Okay, thanks. I'd rather have it but it can't be done :).
One of the major versions ago (could be 1.6, or possibly 1.5) forge included a swathe of performance updates itself. This seems to both confilct with Optifine, and reduce the need for it. That's usually what people seem to mean when it's not needed. It might be useful for vanilla, but forge does a lot of it for itself.

Performance aside, the main reason why I miss Optifine in packs where I don't have it installed, is because Optifine includes an extremely nifty zoom function. I hope Vanilla Minecraft will add binoculars or something one day.

I lag way too much on 1.6.4 without optifine, so I reverted back to 1.4.7's Ultimate and found a nice server. Thanks though!

There are a host of little features from Optifine that I miss. Default glass connected texture. Better grass (no dirt on side of block). Clear view underwater. It never really helped my performance, but I liked the extra graphical tweaks.

As far as the zoom, middle-click with a Portal Gun equipped gets you a zoom. It's not quite as good as the Optifine zoom.
