@GamerwithnoGame has it right. Time will tell how this all plays out.

The start of 1.7 was indeed similar to what we have now... and as I recall had a vast number of mods as WIP. Bear in mind my memory isn't as strong as it once was (lack of sleep, limited play time, working on a memory care floor, etc...) TE comes to mind since they had to do a fairly (or complete can't quite figure it out) redo of the conduit system. Also ender io had to split off its mob system.

1.10 will have plenty of content to play around with. I also would question calling 1.7 the peak. As in sports you can't truly know where the peak is. And in all honesty, peak is in the eye of the beholder. If you classify it by amt of content... you've not given 1.10.2 time to truly settle in. Feel free to correct me, but 1.7 has had nearly 2yrs to get to where it is.1.10 is working on 6mos or so if that.

I like the Hammer as a weapon. I'm already using it, does bonus damage, and I find it amusing to hit things with a hammer. Normally I like a sword, but if I can stack up bonus damage, I have no reason not to.

I'm not at all bored by 1.10. I'm excited to see how the new mods develop and what changes amidst the old ones. For example, the bee's stinging for being close is kind of surprising, but I feel it fits.

As for things like Intangible, I'm not all that interested, but Psi? That looks very cool, and most people I've seen play with it only seem to touch on the very minimum it can do. Etho digs holes, Dire makes 9x9s. I can do that manually. I want to try programming it to build Blood Magic Rituals, or to auto do the rune placement for the tier upgrades.

I'm very excited to play with railcraft's track kits, which look fascinating. And the signalling is in, which means there are all sorts of cool things I can do. No locomotives? No problem, Steve's Carts lives again, so I can use those instead. 1.10 boring? Hardly.

reason was that when you're out mining, you can just drop a portal, go back to base, drop stuff and go back to mining without running.

This string might be a bit dated but the questions and replies are still relavant even in mid-June. So please let me offer a reply...
I find that an ender pouch linked to an ender chest back at base is a very easy way to dump your stuff and continue mining. The ender chest is connected to a Refined Storage importer which keeps your ender pouch empty. I expect AE2 has something similar.
