The "use" is crossbreeding trees. Forestry has like 20 different trees in it that you can only get via this method.

You need to get a sapling drop from the changed leaf block. Usually the chance is really low, but if you use a grafter (a tool from Forestry) then you can get 100% sapling drop rate. Note that it works only on trees with Forestry's genetic data! So vanilla trees won't react to the grafter (unless you run them through a treealyzer or a multifarm before planting to convert them to Forestry), and neither will for example silverwood trees from Thaumcraft. Changed leaves always count as having a genome, so the grafter always works on them.

The sapling you get will (usually) in 90% of all cases be a combination of the traits of the parent trees, and in 10% of the cases you'll get a mutation to a new tree species instead. Just like it works with bees.

The trees you can breed look fancy and have different wood colors for aesthetic building purposes, can grow nuts that give massive amounts of seed oil or fruit that give more fruit juice than apples, and can produce more saplings (or saplings that give more biomass in a fermenter than normal ones). They can also grow thicker and taller, giving you more wood.

This is another forestry mechanic called tree breeding, and it allows you to get trees with different species/qualities than the standard. The leaves of a different colour are mutated, and, if you get a sapling from breaking them, then the sapling will be mutated. This might just be a crossbreed (i.e. the same species, with a different recessive species), or might be a new species, or might have changes qualities.

The grafter from forestry (and thaumium grafter from Thaumic Bees) increases the chance for a sapling to drop (might be 100%, I can't quite remember), but only from forestry trees, i.e. either vanilla trees that have been put through a treealyser/multifarm (and show a different name, e.g. apple oak, rather than oak), or mutated trees. Vanilla trees and biome mod trees will not be affected.

I don't know of any videos that deal with this specifically, aside from mod spotlights and similar, though.
 
How are these trees harvested then? I used a grafter and analyzed some, found out what they were, but I want to know how I get can what they produce.

For trees that specifically produce something (cherry or walnut, for example), the leaves will change texture when they are ripe (i.e. the white circles on cherry trees will become red). That leaf block will drop the produce when broken.

If you want to harvest it and leave it intact, then you need to use a multi-farm.
 
Usually you see the fruit in the leaves, and after some time of waiting for them to mature (fruit changes color), you rightclick the leaf to harvest the fruit. Or multifarms configured as orchards can do the harvesting for you.

EDIT: @Bibble: you sure rightclicking doesn't work?
 
Do multifarms work? I build a managed one in my test world and it went all wonky: kept placing water and soil in the same spots, constant planting and used a ton of water.

Didn't in all the attempts I've tried. I've not played with trees in a while, so it might have been added as a feature, I wouldn't know.[DOUBLEPOST=1371571028][/DOUBLEPOST]

I remember that this was a bug a while back, but should have been fixed now, it was something about the way it was detecting the blocks or something.

Fixed yes...for 1.5.X. The modder won't even support his previous versions anymore and I asked politely.

Do managed farms add the water or does that have to be done manually as well?
 
When Bees are put in Apiaries and you have different kinds of trees around the apiary, the bees will randomly pollinate trees.
Do note that GenerikB is misleading you by saying that the bees pollinate based on where they fly.
The particles have absolutely nothing to do with it.
One of the best bees for Pollination is the Industrious Bee.
Breed up to the Industrious Bee, make yourself an Alveary and an Alveary Sieve, put a silk wisp in the Sieve (So you will need Tropical Bees), put different kinds of trees around the Alveary, and loop your Industrious.
This is best done in Normal, Damp climate as butterflies spawn easily.
I am well-informed in Bee and Tree Breeding, but not Butterfly breeding.
Yet.
Read up on Butterfly Breeding, because you will have a lot of them.
 
you can get around the managed multifarm water bug by prefilling with dirt and surrounding the multifarm with a ring of water source blocks. note i did this for a 4x4x4, so im not sure if the water sources reach all the way for the 5x5x4

This is a way to "pick and choose" what trees you get.
When you use an Alveary Sieve, the leaves do not change.
Instead, the pollinated leave puts pollen in the Sieve.
Then you can right click on a leave of the correct tree to get it!
You can get 1.5.2 with the code
152wgt for 1.5.2 with gregtech or
152ngt for 1.5.2 without GregTech.

Doesn't have RedPower and some of the other mods (I think) for the Ultimate Pack.
