Well, one stick, redstone and lapis isn't that expensive.
You only need three for a quarry. Mark out two corners and their intersecting point. The intersection point is where you place the quarry. Make sure you right click the landmark placed on the intersecting point. You should see two red lines projected from the landmark, perpendicular to each other. (90 degrees, right angle or orthogonal)
Then place the quarry. Voila, is done.
