there is the easy way and the more correct way
the easy way is two config options at the bottom of the config
allow all tools/allow all blocks
don't ask me about the correct way I've never bothered with it
The 1.12 version of VeinMiner is called OreExcavator - default key is grave (`) but can be changed in controls. All tools including clay should work off the bat.
