hello.
my friends and i are starting a new mod-pack server (where using FTB Monster). where planning on using every mod to its full extent and playing on the server for a long time.
the problem is that we cant decide whether to use the:
1) ATG (alternative world generation)
2) Biomes o plenty generation
3) I herd you can do ATG and BoP which would be cool (but was wondering if there was any errors in generation with this (eg: extreme hills with ATG could muck up?)).

could you let me know the Pro's and Con's of these setup and maybe your experiences with this (such as ore not generating in some biomes, BoP wood doesn't work with some mods, etc, etc...)
Thanks in advanced :)

I've used the two together and never had any issues. If you are on a lower end server however, I'd probably not recommend ATG. If you have a decent server, ATG is amazing. Well worth it. :)

Main downside to ATG: Not many river Biomes. Like, close to zero.
BoP+ATG: it's nice, adds some nice diversity to the world generation, but it's not perfect. Well, ATG anyway. I've seen way too many Magical Forest biomes from TC4 spawn on slopes near the water, it bugs me. I mean, I'd rather the Magical Forest spawn further inland.

hey im going to be running the server off the same PC that i play on aswell. I have 8GB of DDR3 RAM but only allow the server to use 4GB of RAM (whilst i use the other 4GB for my client and internet stuff), the files are stored on a SSD, with an i7 2600 CPU. is this high end enough?

My main downside of ATG: Whenever i host my local server it overloads and cannot load anything for like 5 minutes when i gotta explore and make new chunjks.

I know that's a typo, but I swear, that's too perfect.

With a MCPC server you can use the bukkit plugin worldborder to pregenerate the map out to a good distance beyond what you intend to explore (at least at first). Set it to run overnight while you sleep even. A 20kx20k overworld map on my server is about 10GB for reference. I also use this pregenerated map to prerender the OPIS/mapwriter map so I can have a rough idea of what biomes are around.

Back to the OP, I mainly use BoP but many have found that they need to customize it to their own needs as I have. It adds a lot of... funky biomes, but also some really nice ones (canyons and volcanic biomes). Also I really appreciate what BoP has done to the nether. Its much less unsightly to explore whilst still being nethery. Unfortunately no experience with ATG.

Probably just bad luck, but I tried 20+ ATG worlds and could not for the life of me spawn or find an area that wasn't large hills or mountains everywhere. No area was ever flat.

Gave up and went back to BoP.

Our server is running ATG with BOP and it took about 5 worlds until I found one that was the perfect blend of mountains and large flat areas.

ATG is awesome, but as a reminder, it's not the same as BoP or EBXL, which are(mainly) Biome Mods. It's a whole new terrain generator, similar to the one used in Terrafirma Craft.
