Hey all. I am currently in command of a high end OVH enterprise-class dedicated server. We have 240 GB SSD (in a raid 1) and 2 TB storage for backups and such. We're using an E5 1620v, with 500 guaranteed MB/s bandwidth. We've got 64 gigs of rsam, too, but I think we have only allocated 32 gigs. This will be a TPPI-style server.

I'd like to talk about the virtues, advantages and disadvantages of allowing Mystcraft on on such a machine.

Personally I would like to have players able to access new areas if they want to experience something different or new and I feel that allowing them to create their own descriptive books and having fun gives them more reason to enjoy their time on the server. If they want to go make repeat dense ore worlds or just make a lava lake to power their base they can!

I understand though that just allowing this sort of activity can quickly eat up disk space when you have even 10-20 people doing it. So some standards would have to be set, such as "if you don't use XX world in XX time we are going to delete it." Or something.

What do you guys think? I'm super curious :)

My advice is don't allow it, most people create a mystcraft age for the specific point of a mining age, aside from that, some will create dozens of ages with the sole purpose of finding pages, for that one mining age, if you create a public one for the server, you can bypass the need for mystcraft. Most other uses of mystcraft is to create idealistic worlds, such as a massive lava/oil lake, again, if you want to, then just create a public one for everyone to use. Allowing public access to mystcraft world generation will end badly 99% of the time as most server users show little to no regard to the welfare of the server, they'll still complain bitterly though when it starts to lag as a result of what they've done, but you have to love irony.

Storage won't be used that much, each new mystcraft world won't be explored nearly as much as the main world, mostly just a few chunks at most. Though be sure that it is running on there SSD as it will be needed here.

I think it would be a good idea to allow that but be sure to delete those not often used. However if say 30 people make a new world at the same time your gonna have a massive lag spike as the CPU will get a bit loaded for a few seconds.

-This is not an admin's view, I speak for the players.-
Allow it, but put a sensible limit on ages per person. 5 at the most. Give the players some way to delete ages. Also, if you use MCPC, you can use multiworld for an official mining world.

I use OVH too *High five for epic host* (though idk why you would go with enterprise, their soyoustart servers are perfect for minecraft). I run 3 FTB servers, 2 of which have mystcraft. So.. my input:

Do not allow players to create mystcraft ages. Make a few premade ages for players such as a mining world, but allowing players to make their own worlds with the FTB packs will make you regret it within a week. There is a reason why most people have it banned. Not only will it eat up disk space, but the bugs and bad shit that comes along with mystcraft and the unstable worlds will grind the server to a halt if 20 people go and make a world.

On my 2 servers i have a public mining world for the players with no dense ores, and i ban quarries in the overworld. I then make a donator mining world with dense ores and cool things. This way we can still enjoy mystcraft without having people each up disk space and causing issues.

PS: Plasma in mystcraft worlds (Pretty sure most worlds have it) has anywhere from a 10k - 120k entity spikes which drops the tps of my server by about 8. Just a heads up.
