Project Red Saplings

I am playing the Horizons pack and I have not been able to get the project red saplings to grow. I am an a heathland biom, is that teh problem or is anyone else having an issue getting them to grow? I tried bonemealing them and that did not work either. Any ideas on maybe what I am doing wrong?

I think that they just grow quite slowly. I planted some in my world and they didn't grow for ages as well. I would try to use a lily pad of fertility or mfr fertilizer on them.
