I see all these Project Red pipes and cool modules for them in NEI, but I have no idea how they work. Has anybody used them with any success?

I tried them but I don't like them, Attack of the B-Team players seem to know how to use them though.
I would recommend this as a substitute though, far much more simpler and expandable:

Oh I know what tubes is. It's just that I see it in NEI and thought it might be nice to know how they work, especially in packs low in auto sorting solutions such as Horizons(Yes I know there is Steves Factory Manager).

I looked at those pipes once. To me they seemed so close to logistics pipes that I'd be better off using LP since there's more documentation.

If you're looking for a more genuine RedPower experience with pipes, them try itemducts from Thermal Expansion. Or the pipes from Mekanism.

They are a very very cut down alternative to Logistics pipes.

Essentially you use interface pipes to act as destinations and extraction points.
The basic method of moving items is to use an Extractor chip (Cyan), it will pull the items out of the container the interface pipe is attached to so long as the destination has an Item Responder chip (orange).

You also have a stocking chip(Blue) acts like a supplier pipe/ regulator, you put it in to an interface pipe connected to what you want to stock. You have to set all chips before hand by right clicking, this lets you set amounts and filters the items stocked.
The stocking chip doesn't work by it's self and needs a broadcaster chip along it's line (purple) connected to the storage you want the stock ship to take from. Much like extractors and responder chips work.

The request pipe will let you specify and retrieve items from all inventories with a Broadcaster chip.

There's also a craft chip and a terminator chip but in the version I'm using they are not fully implemented yet.

Frankly you end up better off using logistics pipes, that being said I use ProjRed pipes over LP becasue I really don't use LP becasue it's so close to AE in it's proression line you end up with the decision of build a full LP system now or mine for an extra hour and make an ME system. So in my own pack I excluded LP despite LP's superiority and options over ProjRed Transportation.

Thank you for explaining how they work. Now I finally know what those mysterious pipes do.

Hmm interesting. Ive been thinking something similar to logistics pipes request module would be useful to my plans because of the infinite range. So I could remotely request a stack of items to fill a Traincraft storage cart and have it show up from wherever its at a minute later. (Im using a custom map with several different HUGE continents and so much to see, creating a transit system of roads and rails sounds like fun) But LP is an awfully complicated mod to install only for that.

I Believe Vaygrim covered how they work in his mod sorting tutorial, it showcased every sorting portion of a mod and displayed the strengths and weaknesses...

This link should be the video where he talks about it, and 36:31 is about the time in the video inwhich he covers the topic.
That may be the video I watched.

In retrospect while Logistics pipes are more resource intensive but i don't think it requires a trip to the nether for glowstone, if you focus on getting a LP system up ASAP you could get it way before a AE system and maybe even before a ProjRed-Transport system. But LP set to default requires power (config can change that though).
