I recently got a new laptop which I assume is less that 3 months old and I am already experiencing lag. the computer is of a high quality and the specs are:
intel(r) core(TM) i7-3610Qm cpu @2.30ghZ 2.30 ghZ
8 gb ram
64 bit operating system

Any help is much appreciated :)

Did you allocate enough RAM under the "options" tab in the FTB Launcher? Monster is a huge modpack, so at least in my experience you should allocate at least 5GB.

What is probably holding you up is your GPU, which is most likely an onboard due to it being a laptop. This is also, why many people prefer desktops for gaming, as they are easily customizable.

3-4 is fine
You really don't need to allocate any more than 2GB unless you are getting OOMEs (OutOfMemoryException). The java garbage handler is horrible, and allocating too much will cause more framedrops.
