I do not wish to buy a server unless it's absolutely necessary.

I understand that you wish to not rent unless you can fully benefit from the rented service. For most it's when they wish to have their server on 24/7, higher quality hardware to handle heavier loads, and all that good stuffs.

Yeah. All that's gonna happen here is that 2 people will be on (including me). Not too many intensive stuff. We also live fairly close.

You could just use a VPN (such as hamachi) to make it so you don't even need a server. Just open your world to lan, give your friend the port when you open to lan, and all they need is the hamachi IP: Port
and they can join your game :p

I attempted to use Hamachi in like 2012 or 2013, jesus christ it was hell. It just would not work. Nowadays, I just port forward.

I know, that was just a suggestion of a VPN that a lot of people have heard of.

I will never use Hamachi, mainly because I have a dedicated server, but Hamachi seems to mess with my wireless card :p

I thought LAN was for local worlds (as in same house)?

Because all you need to do is find your ip, go to your internet provider, port your ip, and hand out the ip. It's simple and takes maybe two minutes.
Plus you can choose to port the lan world, meaning the server is only up when you are online, or port the actualy server itself, meaning as long as your computer is online the server is too. Or look into free server hosts like Triangle

Does triangle support mods?

I heard they do but there a few limitations I heard as well based on another forum.
1. Takes weeks to pass the awaiting queue
2. And server is limited to a half a GB (unless you pay just like any other service), which isn't all impossible but any decent sized pack need at least 3/4 GB just to boot up and last some playing before needing more memory (for endgame play though for a few people 1GB-2GB is better).

Surely that uses more than a gig...? Maybe 2? How can it be free if the free one is only half a gig?

Home hosted could be one but I am sick of people calling that "free" hosting because even then it's still spending money. It's just doesn't say "pay monthly bill for minecraft server" on those expenses. There are other ways like getting VPSes on "free" credits or even the servers themsleves but they all comes at a cost (ads, your personal data, and etc).

What i said earlier i meant for porting forward, not the triangle.gs

Please be informed home hosting is not considered free in reality, and if to be ran a lot it could even be more expensive than getting a service (mileages will vary of course as always).

I ended up just doing this. My friend has a bit of mob lag (the tps is 20..?). Everything seems fine... In what way could I make this act in any way like a server?
