The blocks being sucked into the vortex is pretty cool though.
I use it as the ultimate silk touch tool. When you attempt to place a block that you pick up with the portal gun, the block essentially becomes a falling sand entity in an attempt to return to block form. Just like falling sand, if the block attempts to form in a space already occupied by a block, it drops as an item. You can use this to do things like picking up peaceable beehives.
I also like to use portal guns to transport Nagas into mazes to get bedrock blocks.

I accidentally broke a full diamond chest by dropping it on grass. Oops!
Does that still work? I tried it twice and the nagas just didn't appear. Is there a trick to it? Where did you place the destination portal?
I learnt a cool portal gun trick from watching DW20 vids. Make an animal pen. Place a portal inside it 2 blocks off the floor. Then search the world for the animals you want to put in it. Place another portal under their feet and they are teleported back to your farm. Saves you having to lead them with wheat.
Oh yeah that's a great technique. I also use it to transport cows and pigs from my farm into my Sentry Turret slaughterhouse, and to transplant unhelpful villagers.
I use it to clear areas for building, easier than a Filler if the moon is up. I can't get it to work in Mystcraft ages though.
Are you guys sure the moon portal will eat worlds? I always thought it had a radious of effect for that reason.

This is how I am going to finally have a stable food supply and trap some villagers.
I used a portal gun to move my overstuffed RP2/Barrel sorting system into my AE storage network. Basically I placed down an import bus that faced upwards. Then I would grab barrels and place them on the bus. Once the barrel was empty break and move the next barrel on to the bus.
A door with any form of block over it, that constitutes a house for a villager, the more doors the more they will breed, yes it really is that simple.

I recommend checking out some DocM77 vids on Villagers and iron golems etc.
Unlike most of the rest of stuff which people recommend that's hidden somewhere amidst 70 episodes of a LP, such as Etho or Direwolf20, this is a dedicated tutorial.
