The future of Minecraft looks uncertain at this point. If the modding community were to stabilize on one version, which would you prefer? Assume that the entire modding community switches to the version you choose - so there won't be major outstanding bugs (like Forge not running on Java 8u20, or TE3 fluiducts duplicating fluids)

(Edit: In the last poll option, I am referring to vanilla bugfixes)

hmm... right now i would say 1.7, if someone makes a patch for the excessive chunk ticking. 1.8 is just too early, when it get up to 1.8.7 or whatever, i will take another look.

1.6? That's as far back as you go? I'mma gonna have to go for 1.2.5 personally. But then, I like playing single player, and am still miffed at getting all the SMP crap dumped onto my SSP game, like it or not.
I predicted that most people would answer with 1.6.4, 1.7.something, or 1.8, but some people would want an earlier version. That's why I made it "1.6.4 or earlier."

I agree, but mainly because the more vanilla stuff you're forced to include (include, not use) the less room there is for mods to change the game - not because of getting SMP crap (bugs?) dumped into SSP.

If we were to stabilize on a single version then I think we should take 1.8. While it is early in its release it has had some major rewrites (threaded chunk generation and such) which I feel are important to go further on. Also we can (if needed) patch the bugs ourselves in case there are no more updates to 1.8.

though the newer versions have alot of fancy new mods and such, for me it's probably 1.2.5
that sure was a golden age in minecraft modding

Minecraft 1.6 is OK. But would benefit soooo much from the 1.7 and 1.8 improvements!

Minecraft 1.7 has this very annoying chunk ticking issue, should not be it. Unless Forge fixes it (not a mod, Forge)

The performance improvements in 1.8 are to good to pass up. The added features like slime blocks, different colored fences/doors, sea content and customized world generation are much needed additions aswell. 1.8 is just an alround amazing update.

I personally enjoy 1.7.10. The Chunk Ticking hasn't hit me too hard, and I've really enjoyed a few of the mods that came out for it. Plus, playing Skylands on PhoenixCraft II is really fun.

For me, it's never been about the vanilla version; it's about the mods supported in that version. Right now, that's 1.7.10 because that's what I'm playing in and I like Botania as well as what Thaumcraft has been doing with Warp. So honestly, as long as the mods I like are supported in an iteration I enjoy, the actual version of the game is quite irrelevant to me.

Since the community would all agree on a version, and certain mods would attempt to follow with the chosen version, i would have to pick 1.4, that's when i started with modded mc, and it had an amazing array of mods to use. Port back a few of the newer mods (and update a few) and i would be very happy

I think 1.6.4 is the most stable right now. And, 1.7.10/1.8 if Forge does some preformance fixes could be great

A popular opinion would be the good'ole days (Alpha and Beta) but personally, 1.2.4(or 5, can't remember) when the new variations of wood blocks came out, I'm very fond of wooden structures :3 Always nice to have new ones, especially the 2 recent ones.
