4gigs is not a lot for MC but *should* be doable. But perhaps not for the bigger modpacks. Make sure you close all other programs while MC is running and also check the amount of memory in the FTB launcher. Try increasing it somewhat (but not excessively).

Go to 'options'. There is a memory slider you can change. Try going to 2.5 gigs or so.

4gigs of ram
With only 4 GB of total RAM you wont be able to allocate more than around 1GB of RAM effectively to MC which is the standard. Depending on OS you will be using 0.5-1.5GB on the OS and other background stuff. Add to that the java client running MC will use around 2-3x the amount you allocate to MC. So as you can see 1GB might even be a stretch...

If you want to play the medium-larger packs you most likely need to upgrade your amount of RAM. Until then I would recommend the FTB lite pack.

You are most likely only running 32bit Java then. If you really want to allocate more RAM(wont recommend it tbh, the result wont be satisfactory) you need to install 64bit java.

Actually my daughter plays with about 90 mods on a 4Gig computer and I gave MC about 2.5 Gigs ram and it works perfectly (although sometimes a bit laggy when it is swapping). So I don't think that this is true actually.

You will need to have a 64 bit OS, and a 64 bit version of java in order to allocate more than 1gb of RAM. I suggest allocating 2.5gb of ram, as that is what is generally considered the minimum for modpacks with a considerable amount of mods.

Well it might work somewhat reasonably if you don't use any heavy mods, no special terrain/biome mods and then don't build anything too complex. And playing on servers helps enormously as well of course. But if you play something like DW20 in singleplayer and then attempt to build complex things(whole point of modded MC isn't it?), then you will max out your RAM and start using the pagefile a lot causing unbearable lag.

I can give you an example: I am playing Monster singleplayer with 3GB allocated and 8GB total. Was fine in the beginning, but my world has recently become complex enough for the jawaw.exe to constantly end up using 6GB+, maxing out my memory. So had to upgrade my RAM.
