Playing DW20, just a query about the Biomes generated by the Biome'sO'Plenty mod.

In my creeper host control panel I have generated several worlds with the 'Biome's O Plenty' option selected so it would add more variety and some interesting terrain types but so far I've been a bit nonplussed at the results.

I often end up with what appears to be a terrible mish-mash of completely random - smallish - biomes, often with mountains sliced in half, 90 degree lines seperating biomes (such as snow to desert, with a perfectly square 90 degree border of nearly 100 blocks) and even a volcano sliced in half by a forest...

I get the feeling that the biomes are all small? Queries..

Is there a config chance I can make to make each randomly generated biome a little larger? I think that's the main problem from what I can see, it's got all these biomes but they all seem to feel very crowded, or is that how it's intended?

Or should I pick another Biome option when making a new world?

I'm asking because I'm thinking mainly of the others who'll be on the server and want them to have a good experience.. so far the DW20 mod looks like a lot of fun :)

Thanks, hope you can help with my query.

Ehm not sure if its in the DW20 pack(its in horizon and planned to be in monster as well), but you should try the ATG world gen with BoP. It creates much more realistic landscapes and groups biomes together so they make more sense(no desert/snow landscapes right next to each other).

do note that ATG can be quite demanding in CPU usage...

ATG is not part of the new DW20 pack.

However, the Horizons pack shipped with a BoP config derp that generates way too little land and way too much water. It's highly possible that the DW20 pack has a similar issue. My friend who tried it out yesterday also reported that every single world he tried was almost all ocean.

It does, the terrain was unplayable for me. Tried about 6 worlds and they were all the same. Small biomes, about a 10:1 water to land ratio, jarring problems with blending the biomes together, etc.

I've watched DW20's first two videos on this pack, and he didn't have this problem. Hmm.

He probably got really really lucky.

Remember, this is the guy who can toss a single pickaxe of the core in an enchanting table during live recording and get it out with Repair II, Fortune III and Efficiency V. After myself trying unsuccessfully to get even one of those three with 10+ tries, I hated him soooo much that moment :p

I haven't tried since 1.0.0, just updated the pack to 1.0.2. Seems to not have this problem or maybe it's just luck.

OP try updating if you haven't.

Heya,

I logged in tonight, updated server and client to 1.0.2 and... much better looking world with Biome's O'Plenty :) Not sure if something changed or just random numbers but i'm not seeing such polar opposite type biomes next to each other, everything seems to flow a lot better.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this kind of worldgen? (this is dw20 s6 map)

That looks like the modpack or BOP version was updated after world creation.
If thats a newly generated world - what seed did you use?

It's the same seed as DW uses in his let's play, I did update the modpack so maybe that's it...it's not the only messed up worldgen either, as I explore more I find more messed up worldgen although this one so far is the worst

at least now I know where to place the quarries :)

As mentioned, that looks like what happens when you add a mod that adds new biomes to an existing world. Any unexplored chunks get biomes assigned that usually aren't what's next to it when you finally explore them. Complete with straight lines between the biomes.

well the only change I've done was this:

Added PowerCrystalsCore v1.1.8-9
Added MineFactory Reloaded v2.7.3-179
Thaumic Tinkerer: v2.0-38 - v2.0-4
Tinkers Construct: v1.5.1 - v1.5.2.1

The curious thing about this particular worldgen was that as I was exploring I got the black strip as in you don't see any worldgen and I'm pretty sure you can't pass it without relogging (it looked like it was 1 chunk deep across the map) When I logged back in the strip was gone and that worldgen showed up.

With the DW20 map thing Dire sent out a tweet saying the wrong version of the BoP config got sent out and some biomes that were disabled are enabled again. The only "fix" for this is grab a copy of the 1.0.0 BoP configs and a fresh copy of the DW20 map. Upgrade your DW20 pack to 1.0.2 and then copy back over the BoP configs.

Start over with a fresh 1.0.2 install and a new world. See if it still happens.

I created a world last night, and flew in one direction for over 30 minutes. Never saw anything out of the norm. The only problem I saw was Thaumcraft trees don't seem to spawn?

I don't really want to start over, got too much done in this world. I made a copy and flew around a bit to see worldgen and it seems everything's fine now so as long as I think twice before updating anything I should be good, just find a new base few thousand blocks away and i'm set

I usually set the Biome Size to 5, its a good in-between from the tiny biomes it usually spawns and the massive sized ones in LargeBiomes.
Code:
####################
# biomes o' plenty world type settings
####################

"biomes o' plenty world type settings" {
    # Default World Type has 4. Large Biomes World Type has 6.
    I:"Biome Size"=5

    # In Vanilla it is set to 32
    I:"Distance between villages"=32

    # In Vanilla it is set to 10. Takes values from 0 to 100.
    I:"Landmass Percentage"=25
}

I would agree with the changes in the Default Biome Sizes.. but after trying over 20 maps now, changing config settings for terrain type, and gen types, I'm still seeing the heavier water levels. Also I noticed there is a rather large margin in chunks altered between setting 4, and setting 5. I've attempted many variants on the Landmass % setting as well, and it hasn't altered anything that I've seen. (Other than make the land that shows up taller by 10-20 blocks.)

I do agree though that altering the biome types after a world has been loaded will mess up a map. If you add even 1 biome, an area that should be Timber, might suddenly be shuffled forward/back in the list, and load the rest of that area as a Marsh. I've learned, while setting up a server that, if I'm going to use a specific seed, I HAVE to have the biomes picked, and set in diamond block before I start it. It's the bane of my existence finding that perfect world for the friends to explore and build on.
