Okay, I want advice from the people that tried this, whether you liked it or not.
RotaryCraft has plugged all of the tech-tree skipping stuff; my old idea of getting you to bedrock breaking quickly is no longer possible, reasonable, or relevant.
Basically, I need a new "final completion quest" for the Jampack 2 contest. The script for the original, if I had finished it, was basically as follows:
1. You arrive in the twilight forest, following up on leads that the removal of all ores and gems from the overworld corresponded to sighting of the Lich from TF.
2. Getting some armor from TF -- the enchanted steelleaf stuff from a minotaur lair.
3. Taking out the Lich (*)
4. Finding the Lich's diary, and getting the real scoop -- the Lich was aware of, and trying to stop someone else. Access to Mystcraft ages from work the Lich had been working on.
5. Several Mystcraft ages. The first was a simple introduction to mystcraft and safety; next were some puzzles, and resource ages. In particular, one would be a flat world, single biome, hell biome, netherrack ground -- a ghast shooting gallery (use bow and arrows for gunpowder). Consider that the only source of gunpowder is either stronghold chests or ghasts, or TF mobs in the labyrinths or ghastling towers, and gunpowder is needed for RotaryCraft.
6. "Final" age was intended by the Lich to be a trap age (disarm) for the person stealing all the resources. Huge amounts of iron, to act as a lure for this person that was stealing iron for those steel-hungry machines. Unfortunately, it was even less of an effective trap than Riven -- creating new books from here is possible, and "easy".
7. "Slidecraft" until you can find a star fissure, to get back to the overworld.
8. RotaryCraft would be introduced starting at the twilight forest, with a message about looking for sources of gunpowder. Lich's diaries would indicate the gunpowder source in the series of ages, as well as the large amounts of iron.
9. Finishing the quest lines results in you having full access to mystcraft ages, rotarycraft machines, etc., with open-ended "what do I do next".
Number 9 is no longer doable with the new rules (quests must have a completion).
RotaryCraft now has nothing to skip, so quests involving it would amount to a full tutorial for the mod, making it too big for the scope, so that is out.
As an alternative to Mystcraft, that includes tech, I could just use RfTools; it would probably need some mod to provide a basic set of power generators, and I can certainly customize things with it about as well as with Mystcraft.
But the basic issue is the same: How do I finish this? What is the ending quest?
The idea that some powerful, semi-magical being has stolen resources from a world because they are resource hungry fits things like RotaryCraft, and gives the resource scarcity that I was going for in this. With RotaryCraft now out of the picture, resource scarcity is less of a reason.
So I'm looking for some advice, ideas, brain storming, etc.
For 1.7.10, what is a good excuse for a low resource overworld, and what makes for a good "completion" quest?
So far, my "best" idea is to have reactor craft radiation poisoning, and an exploded reactor in the overworld -- the world is resource poor because everything went into a reactor that wasn't built properly. (Yea, I didn't say it was a _good_ idea
.
(*): Skippable, if you do something unusual. Not in the visible questline, but a hidden one that triggers a way to bypass killing the Lich
