I have searched a number of Forums and tried different things but have been 100% unsuccessful in installing optifine. Please bear in mind I'm on a mac!! ok so i have placed ZIP file in JARMODS, MODS, I have patched the optifine files into the mine craft JAR in the bin file but that doesn't work as the launcher won't work until i replace the original mine craft JAR (something about JAVA exception in log).

So could someone please guide me as to how I can successfully use optifine.

I know it causes issues with some people but until i try it I'm not going to know?

Many thanks

First make sure you have the correct version of Optifine for the version of minecraft you are running. Depending on the pack it could be 1.4.6(7) or 1.5.2

Now to put it in the instMods, Jar mods folder do the following. Select the mod pack you wish to add Optifine to. Then press the 'Edit Mod pack' button then click on the 'JarMods' tab. From there you can open the folder and manually place it in or let the launcher put it there for you. To do this click on the 'Add mod' button, then find the version of Optifine you downloaded for the pack in windows and click on it. Then select the Open button. Optifine should now be listed just below Forge in the JarMods tab.

Check the instMods folder in the pack and see if it is in there. Also make sure that it is not in the disabled mods side of the list.

So it is in the JarMods tab, but you do not see it in the game? If so load minecraft and before you load up a world click on the Mods button and see if you see it in that list.

That is strange. So it appears in the launcher, but not in minecraft? Could you post a console log to pastebin.com so we can see if there is any error that is keeping it from loading. Click on the 'Paste my log to pastebin.com' A link will appear at the bottom of the log, you provide that to us so we can see the log.

Remove the one in your mods folder first. Now where did you download Optifine from? The name does not give a version number. Try opening the zip and see if there is another zip inside it. Any zip file with a name on it will appear in the list for the JarMods tab. You might want to get it from the official thread if you did not. Depending on which one you want look into the older versions spoiler under each of the versions of Optifine, such as Ultra and Standard and get the first one that is listed as 1.5.2 from top to bottom.

Ok it seems as though downloading the file for some reason MAC does not compress. before I manually compressed the files. I downloaded optifine on a windows laptop and transferred the file to MAC then installed into the jarmods file and WAM optifine works. Next problem attached picture. Now I know there are a number of threads regarding optifine and unleashed mod pack and a lot of people disable it but surely there is a way to use a 64x texture pack and optifine ?

Step one is to get the texture pack working without optifine.

(Err, wait a sec ... did 152 support 64x texture packs natively? )

If you are installing files into the jar on the mac, then be careful how you put things in. If you are replacing files in the root of the jar, no problem.

But if you are putting something into a _folder_, then be aware that the mac wants to replace the folder by default, not put the new files into the old folder. That has to be done by hand.

Magic Launcher, or MultiMC, is what I used to use for this.
I did not, and do not recommend, altering the jar file. Too error prone.

Ok it seems as though downloading the file for some reason MAC does not compress. before I manually compressed the files.

Can you please clarify this? No browser compresses what it downloads when it downloads a zip -- that was compressed and stored compressed on the remote.

Oh, wait -- are you using safari? Do you have "open safe files after downloading" turned on?

Sorry how do you mean 152 support 64 natively ?

Re safari. Yes I think I do. The issue with textures going funny seems to happen after the texture reaches a certain size. I have created a pack with sphax and soartex mixed including 32 and 64 bit png images and I'd say 90% is complete but if I was to add a bunch of new png images it goes wrong

If there are too many textures when using optifine you will get an error. It happens with the tinkers construct mod and maybe others.

Forge has supported upto 128x texture packs for a while now. I would not recommend optifine with 1.5x packs as it will cause problems.

this issue happens without optifine also. Surely a base sphax and unleashed patch would be usable ?

I have tried a unleashed sphax but it caused a crash so I did not use it. I just stick to the default pack but I have used the faithful and soartex ones.
