When I install Optifine on my direwolf it doesn't even register that I have the mod. Please help I am using a Mac with Mountain Lion.

Okay just to eliminate some possibilities of installation error. You have the one for 1.4.6(7)? You have it in the instMods (jar) folder not the mods folder.
Now that those are out of the way. Could you post your console and error log to pastebin and link them here. The instructions are below.

Edit: Also since you are using a mac be sure to get java 6 latest update and not 7.

Not sure about installing on the mac. But on the pc it has to be installed into jar or it won't work.
