I'm am contemplating making/remaking a modpack based loosely around the older modpack "Crash Landing". But since there are what seems to be 3 viable versions of minecraft to go with, I'm stuck on that. 1.9.4 is unstable but some what usable, 1.8.9 is working but a few ideal mods aren't working right for that version, and 1.7.10 is just old but is stable and usable (in terms of modding activity and use by others). I was wonder what the community thought. Is it better to wait untill 1.9.4 is stablistzed? Try to make a not ideal pack with 1.8.4? Go with the very stable and yet older 1.7.10? All opinion are welcome. I don't want to disclose any more modpack details also

1.8.x was put off by developers because there were large changes between it and 1.7.10... we had basically a 2 year wait even though Forge was in beta in 2015. They said they'd wait for 1.9.

1.9 came out just as 1.8.9 development was beginning. Even though an update from 1.8.9 to 1.9.0 was in many cases just telling the compile script to use newer MC and forge, many skipped 1.8.9 and went to 1.9.4 development. As a result 1.8.9 is most likely dead as far as modding goes.

In the last week or two Forgecraft restarted one of their servers with 1.9.4 for testing... This past week Mojang announced MCP for 1.10. To my personal surprise, yesterday (6/25) the Forgecraft server was updated to 1.10, apparently using all the 1.9.4 mods previously installed.

If you're interested in seeing 1.10 with mods Direwolf20 will apparently be continuing his new 1.9.4 server play as it transitions to 1.10. Many of the developers/standard cast of characters there run their own YouTubes/streams as well.

To your original question, I'd probably wait for at least 1.9.4 mods to become available, and maybe build with a 1.10 upgrade in mind. We have a little time here, as Mojang has hinted that 1.11 won't be a public thing until at least Minecon... :D
