Hopefully linking to the Technic pack forum doesn't cause drama, but that's where I saw the mod topic (via a reddit post whose title I blatantly stole).

http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/1-6-4-forge-opencomputers.55582/

Modular computer, a little more balanced in cost, less of "one magic block", and open source to boot. Seems interesting.

Edit: It seems dan200 has...mixed feelings on it. http://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/1t5nr0/opencomputers_not_a_computercraft_clone/ce4m4rs
Overall, he seems to be ok with it though.

I'm pretty impressed by it. Open source? Awesome. More balanced recipes? Check (Coming from a server admin who makes recipes easier.... Yeah, detested CC's recipes) Persistance? Sign me up.
I'm pretty amazed at how Dan seems to think it's plagerism... API calls are meant to be simple, and there are only so many ways to do "mod_robot.forward()". I'm glad he's going to step up his game but... eh.
Goodness, it seems the modding community has lost all originality.
OH NO! What happens if any other mod then Industrialcraft doubles ores for power, even though it is completely different recipes and adds other features?

For goodness sake, look beyond yourself and see this for what it really is. Mods with similar features is completely different from an almost complete replication with a few modules thrown on.
Furthermore, opensource doesn't immediately make anything awesome. In fact as it was stated in reddit, its copy cat mods like this which cause individuals to fear releasing their source code.

This mod is like another mod and therefore it's <invalid logical step>. Someone was going to make another computer mod eventually. Hell, ComputerCraft preemptively 'ripped off' Redpower computers. Any idiot can have an idea. Execution is the important part, and this executed sufficiently differently to be, well, different. Also API methods should be named for usability so less originally if better if possible.

Actually on topic this looks neat. I never really liked CC since the non-persistence made it seem kinda useless.

As I quite clearly stated, there is a difference between similarity and a complete replication with some modules thrown on.

Except it's not a 'complete replication with modules thrown on'. Open Computers and ComputerCraft have clearly separate design goals. In CC, computers are fairly low-end items, needed a only a few items to craft. OC computers require a large range of resources to craft, and suffers from a slight case of sub-component fever. CC computers also run for free, while OC computers need a power source. Simple put, while the mods are similar at a fairly superficial level, and may even be similar at a coding level, it terms of game design, they are widely different.

And since the game play is different, it is impossible for Open Computers to be a 'complete replication' of ComputerCraft since the most important aspect of the mod is different. Game design is an entirely different discipline to writing code. And of course, just because an idea is the same, the implementation can be much better. Itemducts are pretty much Tubes 2, yet nobody cries about King Lemming ripping off Eloraam.

Now how about people actually discuss the mod instead of failing to understand game design?
