I was about to suggest Logistic Pipes, but i see someone beat me to the punch. I'm sad that there is no stable release of Logistic Pipes for 1.4.2 yet, i really want to be able to use them in my singleplayer world :p

I have to agree with those who think this job is too big for Buildcraft pipes. There's such a vast number of items that need sorting (at least five kinds of flowers, for instance, each with their own color of dye) that the pipe system would have to be huge. But you can have a fairly sophisticated system to sort, say, the 30 percent of items you use regularly with Buildcraft. Stuff like ores and dusts, gems, wood, and food.

We're all waiting for redpower and logistics pipes to build awesome sorting systems, but if you need to go with what's in beta A (server play or whatever), there's something that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Gates yet for BC pipes. If you're using BC pipes, they make them suck much less. Autarchic gates have built in redstone engines for your wooden pipes. They have conditions like inventory empty, has items, has space, is full; pipe empty/occupied; pipewire/redstone on/off; etc. The iron gold and diamond gates can use pipewires to transmit signals along the pipes to other gates. The gold and diamond have slots to filter by particular item types. Add some hoppers and you can put together some pretty smart systems that will never spill items. Go look up some buildcraft gate tutorials.

Still there is the main problem with BC Pipes. Unfortunately they dont transport stacks :( And TE machines dont work with gates yet (though it will soon^^)

Bc pipes will transport stacks if you give the wooden pipe sufficient MJ. For instance, wooden pipe out of a chest with a gate set to output red stone signal when it has inventory, and an electric engine pointed at it. The engine will only turn on when there is inventory in the chest, and will suck out stacks until the chest is empty.

really?!! Didnt know that. I thought the frequency redstone engines were max. THX for that info...I will try it asap ;)

Here's my own derpy question: Will the gate's redstone signal be received directly by an attached engine, or does it need to connect via redstone?

Logistic Pipes is currently not in the FTB Modpack, but you can add it manually
but I think its kinda OP what it does. It does EVERYTHING for you though it is neat its rather unchallenging

To be fair logistics also now uses power, and the main battery is a huge drain on the power system until it is filled up. Ungh. But I'd much rather do it with LP than anything else, even RP2 pneumatic tubing as highlighted in DW20's SMP S3 videos. It doesn't work perfectly with everything but I'm finding trying to cram everything in with just LP is challenging enough as it is. And glad to see someone else mentioned Autarchic gates. Though personally I just work with redstone engines. Far cheaper and coupled with a standard iron gate only one more block. Also far more control when you want to shut down the system to reroute some pipes/wires.

My vote for logistic pipes.... although on the server I am on at the moment I have 3 diamond chests and just dump everything into those.

There was one here:
http://ci.thezorro266.com/

However it has disappeared in lieu of the 1.4.5 version. Not sure how stable you are looking for, I haven't had any problems with it. In fact right now my main problems are with iron gates on pipes attached to biogas engines. Logistics has been smooth for me.

BC Pipes for sorting the main things you want, but not for sorting every single type of block. In my Tekkit play I had at one stage 5 quarries pumping into a dumping location, and a pipe that ran around my "factory". This pipe had diamond pipes scattered along it to filter out the items I wanted. So first it grabbed the ores, sent them off to be macerated and then smelted, others after that sent materials to crafting stations, and other machines. At the very end was a diamond pipe to dump the common stuff into a condensor, and anything else into a "unsorted/unprocessed" chest. This chest never really filled up. If I noticed that there was a lot of a certain item in there, I'd look to see where I need to add this item into the diamond pipes so it's sorted correctly.

Can't really see the need to have a sorting system that sorts every single item into it's own container. Seems a bit overkill, but each to their own :D

Can anyone recommend a tutorial/let's play that details about buildcraft gates. I don't really fully understand them, need to see them in action really.

Ahh, yeah i tried getting the 1.4.2 version there and for some reason the launcher kept crashing with it. Weird.

There is a 1.4.5 jar up on the site right now, but the rest of the modpack hasn't been updated, so I guess we just have to wait xD

Yeah, that's what I'd do with diamond pipes. For single player it's pretty much enough for sorting ores and random loot you get in Forestry's backpacks. Handy as they hold all kinds of stuff in one bag. You can even configure one pipe to spit out stuff at you to pick up you want to keep on you, like torches that go in the builder's backpack but it would be a pain to empty it from other items manually.

Direwolf20 is the best bet for tutorials:

BC Pipes for sorting the main things you want, but not for sorting every single type of block.

Yet you go on to describe a system which does in fact, sort every type of block.

Can't really see the need to have a sorting system that sorts every single item into it's own container. Seems a bit overkill, but each to their own :D

Which describes a fundamental misunderstanding of Logistics Pipes when it comes to sorting. I am not sorting every item into its own container. In fact your sorting system could just as easily described mine. I have an incoming chest which has a Chassis Mk II applied to it with the quicksort module and a provider module. The quicksort module pushes items which are known into the system. Once in the system ores are sent through the maceration/smelt steps (pick your mod, I use TE's Pulverizer and Powered Furnace this build, last build was IC2's macerator and furnace), the resin gets sent to the extractor, overflow low-priority items go to IC2 recyclers. The rest of the stuff goes into chests based on simple rules. Know how many chests I havae (iron chests, that is). 7. Thaumcraft, Fuel, Scrap, Ores/Ingots.Dusts, Tech, Basic drops, basic blocks. That is. 7 chests.

Here's Logistics Pipes and BC Diamond/RP sorters differ. You have to tell those where you want each item to go at the front of the line. You have a limited set of filters you can place at any given junction and those filters only have a limited set of items that can go into it. LP works on the request system, the itemsink module requests items which are in the chest to which it is attached. IE, the configuration of the system is done simply by dropping at item into a chest instead of through a GUI. Not only that but it is not limited by the number of filters or the filter limitations at any step of the way.

Am I sorting every item into its own chest? Far from it. This actually lets me get by with fewer chests. And the configuration is as natural as putting an item in the chest I would put it in anyway.

DW20 does a decent job of showing them off in his builds. They are pretty simple. Of course the problem I am having right now is with logic gates on liquid pipes attached to a Biogas engine. I want to have the gate detect when the engine's fuel tank is empty and send a redpipe signal to another gate on the other end of the pipe. That gate would emit a redstone signal which would turn on the redstone engine to pump fuel out of my tank. This is so I can have my fermenter shut off when the tank is full and allow a stock of saplings to build up from my tree farm. The problem is the empty-tank condition on the biogas engine isn't attached to the fuel-tank. I have no idea which tank it is attached to. It only triggers when I use the tank has fuel conditional. So maybe the lava tank, which is less than useful.

Of course this could be mitigated by having my energy storage send a signal to my engines to stop. However since my energy system is based on TE's Redstone Energy Cells/Conduits I can't used gates. I thought I could jury rig a gate on a lone cobble conductive pipe attached to the cell, just set it to the full conditional and emit. Except emitting turns off the cell from sending power anywhere. Which kinda kills the possibility of it every draining. >.<

Thanks for the DW20 link. It's given me something to think about and to experiment with now i understand the general basics.

Logic pipes seem a bit involved and resource heavy at initial glance, but I can see they give you ultimate control once you've figured them out.

Use a gold or diamond gate, and stick a bucket of biofuel in to tell it to look for that liquid.

Ahhh, thanks. I was not aware that different gates have different conditionals. There doesn't seem to be great details on the wiki. I will try that this evening.
