I've seen this bandied about in various forms here and there and I wanted to get some feedback and opinion from a place a bit more conducive to constructive conversation than Reddit.

While I have my own thoughts on the matter, I'm curious what the thoughts of all you others, devs, modpack makers, server owners, and players alike.

Not forced but rather reminded.
Players and especially server owners don't want to have to update every few days. And when the old saves cannot be used anymore it gets really problematic.

Archaic versions of should of course not be used.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Reminders could be useful; though the pack dev would [ideally] be following the update cycle of the mods they use.
(Certainly stuff like use XX.Y.Z version with ABC mods in your next pack update should be ok)
Actually forcing an immediate update? Not without very good reason(s). [ie major/worldbreaking bugfixes]
Though this is a somewhat complex issue with too many variables for a straight yes/no answer- doing such could be highly destructive either way.

A lot of modpacks are designed around a specific version of a mod, some mod updates change mechanics/"balance"/features which would totally invalidate how the modpack works.

Likewise I wish all mods had a config option to disable version checking, for those specially designed/themed modpacks that need to use a specific version, having a ton of messages about updates everytime you load just looks meh. TBH I prefer the approach where you just get notified once.

yes and no. I can understand both sides why they do what they do, so it's kind of a difficult thing to deal with.
though in my opinion if there's a problem with a mod in a modpack, the first party that should be contacted would need to be the modpack side.

the modpack side will inform the user who does the report if it's something related to the modpack (certain mod combinations) or the mod itself, and if it's already been reported or not.
if it's not reported the modpack team should file a bug report to the mod developer.

I picked no.
Good thing there has been no modder yet (That i've seen) who has FORCED folks to keep up to date, I don't consider "Updaet Pl0x" messages as a form of enforcing no matter how obnoxious.
If they start to take up too much screen realestate maybe I'll revise that opinion but so far so good.
