thats actually nice because you can make water or lava 32x and blocks 16x if you want...

In theory this should help performance, especially if mod makers do the same. I get quite annoyed seeing a mod containing 4 or 5 sprite sheets, and each sheet only has 2 or 3 actual blocks in it. That's a big waste of memory. Hopefully Mojang change texture loading so that textures are loaded on demand, instead of loading them all at the start, sitting there taking up memory resources.

Does also make comptability texture packs much more easier. I've been doing this for Misa's textures and the mods for world gen items. In future, you only need to make available the textures you are changing, and not have to include everything else that you are not changing, and if combining packs, no more editing sprite sheets to merge together your favorite textures from different packs.

Vanilla is getting hoppers? That is so awesome. It's also pretty obvious where they are coming from, even the crafting recipe is almost the same :)

Even if Mojang doesn't come through, I'm sure that the community would eventually come out with a tool to split sprite sheets.

In fact, I remember seeing a program do exactly that, but those are days from long ago...

Mojang have already released a tool to split the vanilla MC sprite sheets.

Seems like a great idea. Possibly tough to make the transition at first but it should be worth it.

The compass, clock, water, and lava will need to be redone. Other than that, the transition should be seamless.

Compasses and clocks consist of two sprites consisting of a rotating texture and a static texture. It should actually make it easier to texture those two.

Animated water, lava and pretty much any liquid with an animation are probably the only blocks that will need any sort of sheet, but they'll be far smaller in size.

I think the hopper is a very rare case: It is better than the one introduced by the inspiring mod:
Auto slurping from chests above (I very much like that) and outputting not only to the bottom, but alternatively also to the sides.

too bad they don't have a sided inventory (that is forge added)
