So I just built a smeltery, and when I try to place my fifty iron ore into it, it just flickers in the controller between the first tick of progress and no progress. When I hover over the controller, it says there's nothing inside. I do have lava in the tank.

the controller only tells you if something is inside the smeltery when the smeltery has liquids in it, not items
did you check if your ore can even be smelted in the smeltery? there's a good chance the smeltery doesn't allow for smelting that item

^This. The smeltery works fine on ores that are standardized in the ore dictionary but can possibly have some problems with special forms generated by other mods if you try to extend the multiplication effects of those mods... Some work, some won't.

As I said above, it was plain old, vanilla iron ore, which since it's required in alumite, is allowed to be smelted.

When weird things happen like this, the controller is trying to look and make a valid smeltery. Do you by chance have any snow inside the smeltery? That will cause it to stop working. Also, stray item entities can sometimes cause this as well. If either of those issues were present, you may have to break and replace the controller to fix it.

you may have to break and replace the controller to fix it.

This has so far fixed similar symptoms 100% of the time. Breaking and replacing the controller has also never (so far) resulted in loss of lava.

You may also have had something fall into your smeltery. Snow did it to me 1 world. A sapling or apple from a nearby tree farm might do it. Heck, a butterfly in there might prevent it from working. Break the controller, walk in, clear it out, and replace the controller. Then, put a roof over it !

Turns out as I was building it, a piece of dirt fell into it. I knew that entities inside of it made it stop working, but wasn't even thinking in that direction. Thanks all for your help!
